Only raccoons believed to be sick that were humanely killed will be accepted. People submitting specimens must make sure the skull is not damaged and that tissue is fresh. Maggot infested or extremely decomposed specimens will not be accepted. The location where the raccoon was discovered will also be requested. All specimens should be handled using water-repellent gloves and doubled bagged to prevent further exposure. In 2012, Ohio has seen 11 rabies cases.
