'Living With COPD' program offered
DAMASCUS - People suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, known commonly as COPD, often have a difficult time breathing. To help them learn more about this common lung disease, Dr. Abdul Basit from Alliance Pulmonary Associates will present, "Living With COPD," as part of the Damascus Friends Church's health ministries.
The program is scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Canyon Room at the church, 28857 Walnut St. Light refreshments will be served after the program. This free seminar is sponsored by Firestone Healthcare Inc., Pleasant View North Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Damascus, Senior Independence Home Healthcare and Hospice, Alliance Community Hospital and Salem Community Hospital. MetroParks commissioners will meet
YOUNGSTOWN - The next regular meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks starts at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 in Fellows Riverside Gardens on McKinley Avenue in Youngstown.
East Palestine orientation scheduled
EAST PALESTINE - Fifth grade orientation begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 in the high school auditorium. Fifth graders will receive their schedules at this time. The East Palestine Middle School will host a Meet and Greet from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 23. This event begins in the high school auditorium with an overview of building procedures and review of the Parent Access on Progressbook. Students may pick up their schedules, find their lockers and classrooms, and purchase locks for $6 for their lockers. The East Palestine PTO and the ADAPT Coalition will have a bundle of school supplies available for students.
County Firefighters Association will meet

ROCC Fest's fundraiser is Aug. 18
LISBON - The public is invited to the ROCC Fest's fund raiser on Aug. 18 at the Guilford Lake Grille, 7094 Eastlake Road. Music will be provided by Zach Paxson from 8 to 9 p.m., Rock & Blues from 9 to 10 p.m., The Knowledge Dropout from 10 to 11 p.m. and The Breezeway from 11 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $10 at the door. There will be a 50/50 and raffle baskets. Proceeds will be directed to the Columbiana County Humane Society's Reduce Overpopulation of Cats and Canines program.
First Friends Church hosting Chicken BBQ
SALEM - The Salem First Friends Church on Jennings Avenue is hosting its 10th annual Friends Disaster Service Chicken BBQ on Aug. 18 featuring live entertainment and a silent auction. Dinner will be served from 4 to 8 p.m. Cost for the chicken dinner is $10. A children's hot dog meal is available for $4. Advance tickets are recommended and may be purchased at the church office. Poker Run benefit scheduled Aug. 25
SALEM - A poker run benefit for Brayden Delp will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Salem AMVETS Post 45, 750 S. Broadway Ave. Sign-ups are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $10 per single, $20 per couple, and $7 for non-riders. All street legal vehicles are welcome with the first vehicle out at noon. There also will be raffles, a Chinese auction, food and dancing to DJ Mikey Mike from 9 p.m. to midnight.
Port Authority board meeting canceled
LISBON - The special meeting of the Board for the Columbiana County Port Authority has been canceled. The port authority has received notice from Tervita that it is not moving forward with the acquisition of the Youngstown & Southern Railroad pursuant to the terms of the Letter of Intent between the parties. The port authority will now actively pursue other potential purchasers who have expressed interest in the line.
