Poker run to honor fallen officers

By MARY ANN GREIER , Salem News

SALEM - A poker run to help raise funds to remember fallen police officers in Youngstown will include pit stops in Salem and Wellsville Sunday afternoon.

The Forever on Patrol Memorial Poker Run is being sponsored by the Youngstown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28, featuring all vehicles, whether motorcycles or show cars, on a 120-mile trip that kicks off at noon from the Quaker Steak & Lube on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and includes brunch, with the cost $15 for single and $25 a couple for the ride and dinner or $10 for single and $15 a couple for the ride only.

Retired Youngstown police officer Rick Alli said this is the second year for the event and includes a parade to the Fallen Officer Memorial Monument in downtown Youngstown for a Fallen Officer Remembrance.

Alli stopped at the Salem Police headquarters earlier this week to give officers a heads up that the poker run would be traveling through town.

All money raised goes to the Fallen Officers Memorial Fund to keep the memories of the fallen police officers alive throughout the year.

Held rain or shine, the poker run will include a stop at Mike's Penn Avenue Grille in Salem and at the Crystal Lounge in Wellsville. Alli said participants can choose to do half the trip by registering in Wellsville and riding from Wellsville back to Quaker Steak & Lube in Boardman where there will be music, raffles, prizes and food.

Besides Mike's Penn Avenue Grille, the Crystal Lounge and Quaker Steak & Lube, sponsors include Simon Roofing.
