Quench your workout at SCC

Whether you are novice swimmer, a groupie fan of the United States Olympic Swim Team 'Call Me Maybe' video, know a youngster anxious to learn the competitive strokes, a tri-athlete looking for camaraderie and workouts an experienced swimmer looking for a new challenge, or a senior who enjoys the benefits of swimming, we are excited to offer you our new Learning to Accelerate your Potential for Swimming, LAPS Program starting today at the Salem Community Center.

We want to ride the wave of the U.S. swimming success at the London Olympics and provide an opportunity for all ages to learn the many health benefits of swimming. LAPS will offer the participants competitive stroke development with interesting drills, workouts and aquatic fun. It is our mission to introduce and affirm that swimming LAPS can be fun and may be the element that is lacking in your current fitness regimen.

Learn the competitive strokes of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Swimming provides an entire body workout by simultaneously incorporating arm and leg movements. By combining drills and refining techniques of all strokes, we will engage and tone more muscles in just one workout while experiencing the benefits of a cardiovascular workout at the same time.

Accelerate your potential for swimming. Swimming LAPS will increase your aerobic capacity and lower blood pressure with regular workouts at least twice a week. We will focus on breathing techniques. Practicing and developing correct techniques will improve your endurance levels and ease the effort of swimming each lap.

Potential for swimming your best is now available right here in Salem at our beautiful competitive Reasbeck Natatorium. Athletes of all levels will be challenged to improve their fitness level. Individual goals will be addressed.

For those who want to flip turn, you will! For those who want to dive properly, you will! For those who want to train to swim in a triathlon, you will!

Swimming is an excellent exercise for stretching. You will soon appreciate the stretch, rhythm and roll of each stroke! We will develop and train each participant to love the stretch and think streamlined!

One of the many benefits of swimming is that it promotes flexibility of joints without added stress, making swimming an excellent fitness option for those who are overweight and are seniors.

Aside from the wealth of evidence that swimming provides a healthy physical workout, it must also be mentioned that there are many psychological benefits of swimming as well. Call it aquatic therapy if you will! Swimming may be your healthiest habit yet. Experts agree that immersion in water reduces stress. Regular weekly swimming workouts will energize your day and increase motivation. Your self-esteem will improve when you notice the effects of increased muscle toning. We invite you to share in this healthy habit! Our LAPS Program is offered for three age groups:

- Tiger Sharks LAPS, ages 7-10 will be held on Sundays from 4-5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m.

-Great Whites LAPS, ages 10-15 will be held on Sundays from 5-6 p.m. and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m..

-Adult LAPS will be held on Sundays from 6-7 p.m. and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m..

Guidelines to participate in LAPS include the ability to swim one length of front crawl and one length of back crawl. Some understanding of butterfly and breaststroke is recommended, as is some instruction or ability comparable to Level 5/6 of swim instruction.

Participants will need a swim suit, towel and goggles. SCC Swim caps will be distributed to those who register for the fall session. Registration options are available and range from a discounted full fall session, monthly rates and individual class rates.
