William G. Young

SALEM - William Young, 88, of Salem, died at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 at the Hospice House in Poland, Ohio.

He was born Sept. 14, 1924 in Greenville, Pa., the son of Hughey and Asta (Roberts) Young.

Mr. Young was a graduate of Greenville High School, Greenville, Pa. He went on to earn a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and a B.S. degree in naval science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was in the Naval ROTC at Georgia Institute of Technology and served with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Navy Reserves where he served as the rank of lieutenant.

Before his retirement, Bill was last employed as an engineering consultant with East Ohio Machine in Alliance and had previously been vice president of engineering with Fairchild International in Glen Lyn, Va., and chief engineer at Salem Tool Company. He had also worked as an engineer at both Joy Manufacturing in Franklin, Pa. and Mine Safety Appliances Company in Pittsburgh.

Bill was also an inventor and co-inventor on 10 patents. He was a world traveler and member, past exalted ruler and past trustee of the Salem Elks Lodge #305, past president of the Salem Manufacturers Association and a member of the Salem American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, doing puzzles and was an avid gardener.

His wife, Gloria M. "Pat" (Reiser) Young, whom he married March 3, 1944, survives him along with a daughter, Cheri (Ted) Lisi of Salem; a son, Bill (Darla) Young Jr. of Beloit; seven grandchildren, David M. Adams, William T. Adams, John P. Lisi, Joseph S. Lisi, Theodore R. Lisi, William Guy Young III and Dr. Robert L. Young; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Brayden Lisi; and several other great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren

A brother, Robert Lyle Young preceded him in death.

Private services were held by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, OH 44512 and the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad St, Canfield, OH 44406.
