Shirley Y. McKarns

CANTON Shirley Y. McKarns, 77, of Canton, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from complications due to recent cancer surgery.

She was born in Carroll County, Ohio on Aug. 2, 1935 to the late Lawrence and Pearl Hawkins.

Shirley was a 1953 graduate of Carrollton High School.

She retired from Hawkins Insurance Agency (Kensington, Ohio) in 2000, following 28 years of employment.

Shirley was a member of Jackson Friends Church and the Generations Class. She had also attended Damascus Friends Church, Winona Friends Church, and was the pianist, organist, and choir director at Bethesda Presbyterian Church (Millport, Ohio) for over 20 years. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard McKarns.

Survivors include her three children, Cindy (Mark) Ziegler of Phoenix, AZ, Lee (Joy) McKarns of Dayton, Ohio, and Tammy (James) Duplain of Canal Fulton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and her siblings, Dorothy (Ernest) Cole of Kensington, Ohio, Harold (Mary) Hawkins of Leetonia, Ohio, and Robert Hawkins (Mary Lou) of Canal Fulton, Ohio.

In lieu of calling hours or a viewing, the family will host a reception line on Monday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in Jackson Friends Church, 7945 Portage St. NW Massillon, Ohio 44646, with Pastor David Tebbs officiating.
