SEBRING - Leonard J. Spencer, 89, of Copeland Oaks, Sebring, died at 2:55 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, of congestive heart failure at the Salem Community Hospital where he was a patient for five days.
He was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Beloit, the son of the late Leonard Garfield and Stella (Arthur) Spencer.
Mr. Spencer was the owner of the former Salem Appliance on East State Street in Salem for over 40 years and retired in 1988. He was a member of the East Goshen Friends Church and a 1941 graduate of Goshen High School. Leonard was a member of the Salem AMVETS Post 45, the George W. Worth American Legion Post 0574 of North Georgetown, Salem Elks Lodge 305, Sebring Country Club, Sebring Masonic Lodge, and UCT 590. He was an avid golfer and following his retirement, he spent the winters in Briny Breeze, Fla.
During World War II, he was a veteran of the U. S. Army.
His wife, Mary Jane (Myers) Spencer, whom he married May 11, 1948, preceded him in death on June 15, 2003.
Survivors include two sons, Robert D. (Donna) Spencer of Beloit and Gregory L. (Wendy) Spencer of Salem; a daughter, Connie (Rich) Franklin of Salem; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Robert Spencer, and three sisters, Wilma Bayless, Vera Spencer and Olive Beardsley, also preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Baker officiating. Burial will be in East Goshen Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Salem Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
