Butler Twp. tire recycling is today, Saturday

BUTLER TOWNSHIP - Residents of Butler Township can take light truck and passenger tires that are off the rims and free of debris to the township hall on Slater Road for recycling.

The tire recycling will be held from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. today and from 8-11 a.m. Saturday.

Winona Friends Church serving dinner

WINONA - The Winona Friends Church on Whinnery Road in Winona is holding a Swiss steak dinner from 4-7 p.m. Saturday.

The dinner is open to the public. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Carryouts will be available. Contact the church office at 330-222-1551 for additional information.

Parent of gifted students will meet

LISBON- There will be an EXCEL/GATE parent support meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday for parents of gifted students currently receiving gifted services in Columbiana County school districts.

The meeting will be held at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, 38720 Saltwell Road, Lisbon.

SAVNA holding screenings, giving flu shots

LISBON -The Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association (SAVNA) will provide blood pressure screenings and flu shots at the Pumpkin Fest 2012 on Saturday and Sunday in the Arts and Crafts Building at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds.

Flu shots will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $20.

The SAVNA will bill Medicare Part B or Anthem Senior Advantage Products (YRA, YRE, YRI & YRS prefixes only). Those attending are to bring their insurance card. A drawing will be held for a gift basket.

VFW Post 5532 will meet Oct. 11

WASHINGTONVILLE - Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5532 plans to meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the post.

'The History of Quilting' will be presented

CANFIELD - The Canfield Historical Society continues its fall lecture series with a lecture by Clare Neff titled, "The History of Quilting" at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the society's Bond House, 44 W. Main St., Canfield.

Admission is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary.

"The History of Quilting lecture is a condensed version of quilting's history, from Asia through Europe, through the settling of the New World and Ohio," said Neff.

"This program started as the history of Ohio quilting, but research took us back to the very beginning. It includes photographs of quilts, quilted objects and quilting styles throughout history and demonstrates how all of that history has developed into today's quilting styles," she said.

Neff will also display a few quilts from her personal collection including quilts from the estate of Anne Kilcawley Christman and her great-grandmother, Eleanor Manchester Tate. For more information call the historical society at 330-533-3458.

Salem Band Show will be held Oct. 13

SALEM - The 17th annual Salem Band Show begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Reilly Stadium. Bands from Beaver Local, Columbiana, Crestview, Lisbon, United Local and Salem are scheduled to perform.

There will be a combined song played by all bands on the field. Admission is $5 for adults, and free for children under 10.

Dinner will benefit Alchemy Acres

SALEM - A spaghetti dinner benefit for Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Hickory Rib, 377 S. Ellsworth Ave.

Tickets are $7 and free for children under 5. Tickets will be sold at the door or available in advance by calling 330-332-4897.

Glenview Cemetery flowers need removed

EAST PALESTINE - All flowers and decorations at Glenview Cemetery in East Palestine must be removed by Oct. 15 or they will be discarded.

Fall and winter decorations may be put on the graves beginning Nov. 1.

Lisbon Methodist Church is recyling site

LISBON - The Methodist Church is the local site for PaperRetriever Recycling.

The bright green and yellow bin sits in the parking lot at the rear of the building at the corner of South Market and East Washington Street, ready to receive all neighborhood recylable paper, including newspapers, inserts, magazines, catalogs, office and school paper, and most mail.

All are welcome to use the bin. Proceeds from the recycling project will be used for future building improvements.

YOUNGSTOWN - Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive on Nov. 3. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries' donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will participate in the event along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to a participating donation center on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch. The Girl Scout, or their troop, must register in advance by contact Goodwill's marketing office at 330-759-7921 Ext. 1207 with their troop number, donation center location, and number of girls participating, or they can email the information to e.parker@goodwillyoungstown.org.

BOARDMAN - The Boardman High School Class of 1987 is holding its 25th-year reunion on Nov. 24 at Drake's Landing in Canfield. The reunion committee has set up a website at www.boardman1987.com to purchase tickets, register classmates, remember lost friends and offer details for those traveling to Boardman for the event. Tickets are only available through the website and are $55 until Oct. 10. After Oct. 1, the price increases to $60. The LAA is accepting nominations from now until Jan. 1 for potential inductees. To nominate a classmate for this honor, go the web link for the Lisbon Alumni Association for a form at lisbonalumniassociation.com. Nominees for Hall Of Fame Nominees should meet the following criteria: A graduate of David Anderson High School; must be at least 10 years since graduation; based on lifetime achievements; must have made a significant contribution to the school, or their community, state, nation or globally. Nominations for the roast candidate(s) include any DAHS graduate you would like to see "roasted" in a kind, fun-filled, often humbling, but family-oriented venue. YOUNGSTOWN - The MetroParks Bikeway Spur Trail (trailhead) at the MetroParks Farm will remain closed through Oct. 12, in conjunction with the stream and wetland restoration project that is under way. The bikeway will remain open during this time, but will not be accessible from the MetroParks Farm parking lot. Access the bikeway from other trailheads: Mahoning Avenue, Kirk Road, or Canfield High School (note that parking at the high school may be restricted during school hours or special events). SALEM - Catholic Daughters of the Americas will meet for lunch at 11 a.m. Oct. 11 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.
