GROVE CITY - James L. Murphy, formerly of Louisville, born July3, 1941, passed away on Monday morning, Oct. 8, 2012, at the James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, after eight years of a courageous battle with cancer.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Matthews Murphy, and his father, George W. Murphy.
He is survived by a sister, Patricia (Bryan) Israel of Alliance; a brother, George A. (Darlene) Murphy of Bristolville; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his long-time companion and friend, John A. Stauffer.
Jim was an avid archeologist. In 2008 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Archeologist Society of Ohio. He was also an historian of Ohio, especially its pottery, and was a prolific writer. Jim retired after 30 years of service with the state of Ohio, a short period at the Ohio Historical Society and approximately 24 years at the OSU Library. He was a gentle man with a brilliant mind and a quick wit. He leaves a large hole in our lives.
