GOSHEN TOWNSHIP- Two Salem men have been charged with possession of drugs following a routine traffic stop Wednesday night.
Eric S. McFarland, 33, 1284 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem, was arrested for operating a vehicle intoxicated, possession of drug abuse instruments and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia; and cited for driving under suspension, expired license and lanes of travel following a traffic stop on state Route 14 at the U.S. Route 62 freeway at 8:17 p.m. His passenger, Richard Thomas Lowe, 29, 531 Walnut St., Salem, was cited for possession of drugs.
A patrolling officer initiated the stop after finding the vehicle's registration to be expired and that the vehicle had been referenced in a drug activity tip in Salem earlier that day. McFarland admitted to smoking marijuana that evening and snorting heroin the prior night.
A search of the vehicle revealed a small metal socket containing burnt marijuana residue on the floor in front of the driver's seat and a metal spoon with burnt residue inside the driver's side door, as well as four syringes in the overhead sunglasses compartment. McFarland claimed all the items were his.
Lowe claimed responsibility for a partially burned marijuana cigarette in the passenger side door.
Both men had warrants issued for their arrests in jurisdictions outside the department's pickup radius.
