SALEM - Bernice M. (Matthews) Shears-Horning 93, of Salem, died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Community Hospital.
She was a very loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed life to the fullest in all things she did. She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren.
She was born on Dec. 17, 1918 in E. Palestine, Ohio, the daughter of Roy J. and Anna Gertrude (Stiver) Matthews.
She was the former secretary for the Salem First United Methodist Church and retired in 1996, and was a member of the church, a 1936 graduate of Salem High School, a member of the Salem Historical Society and an active member of the 1936 class breakfast.
She has lived in various locations around the area, but was raised in Salem, lived in Canton, Boardman, Diehl Lake, Berlin Center and then moved back to Salem.
She is survived by her children, Bonnie (husband James) Stoops of Mogadore, Ohio, and Terry (wife Patricia) Shears of Boardman, Ohio, four grandchildren, Michael (wife Abby) Stoops, Jennifer (Husband Michael) Lagasse, Matthew (wife Aimee Phan) Shears, and Adrienne (husband Joe) Deaton, and seven great-grandchildren, Allie, Jordyn, Jessica and Ryan Stoops, Amelie and Isaiah Shears, and Tyler Deaton.
She is also survived by her beloved friend Vance Stewart of eight years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Shears and by her second husband, Vincent Horning; and an infant brother Richard.
A Celebration of Life Service will be observed at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral Home in Salem. The Rev. P. Doug George and Rev. Bruce Irwin will officiate the service. The burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
