FRANKLIN SQUARE - Salem Township Constable Dan Valentine said he is still working leads on the bridge ironworks stolen from the Watkins property in the 37000 block of state Route 344 about two weeks ago.
Thieves pull nearly 25 to 30 pieces of heavy, 10-foot long steel beams from the top of a bridge spanning a creek that provided access from Lisbon Canfield Road to state Route 344.
The beams were bolts down and four were left in place by the thieves because they couldn't undo them.
Valentine said they probably weighed about 100 pounds each while noting that steel scrap sells for about $230 to $250 a ton and there are a number of scrap dealers in the area.
Valentine said Wednesday he was pursuing leads, every one of which was generated by media coverage. He said he was working with the East Palestine police on leads "over there" adding he was "still working on it ... something's happening every day."
Valentine also cautioned motorists about deer movement on roadways.
"I've never seen it like this," he said. "As soon as someone hits a deer there are four or five people coming out of the woodwork wanting the deer.
"There are lots of deer," he said.
The Salem Township and the Leetonia police departments are holding their annual care and share program accepting money donations for needy families.
Money donations, which are preferred can be dropped off at the Leetonia Police Department, 300 E. Main St.
In other business, Bob Wines, a member of the Buckeye Water District and up for reappointment, spoke to trustees during Wednesday's about getting reappointed.
Wines is one of nine board members and the only one whose term expires this year. It expires on Dec. 31.
After going over his background in detail, Wines said the district is expected to announce a "humongous project" before Christmas.
Trustee Chairman John Wilms asked if something real big came into the township would the BWD be able to provide the water.
Wines said it depended on several factors since water lines are expensive. He said that could limit the size because "you can only move so much water through a pipe."
He also mentioned grant programs while explaining the goal of the district is to supply water for the county and obtain agreements from municipalities.
