ELKTON - Mary E. Sturgeon, 91, of state Route 154, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday at the Blossom Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a recent illness.
Born May 15, 1921, near Lebanon, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Albert L. and Rosa (Raley) Cox.
Mrs. Sturgeon began her teaching career as an elementary teacher at Crestview and then as a high school teacher at Southern Local and later taught Latin and English at Beaver Local High School, until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and served as a lay pastor at the Williamsport Chapel and on the Columbiana County Board of Education.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin D. Sturgeon, whom she married July 12, 1947; daughters, Mary Jo (Louis) Sims of Yellow Springs and Gwen Ellen (Frank) Francis of Highlandtown; son, George Franklin (Dianne) Sturgeon of Atwater; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Albert Sturgeon.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home in Lisbon.
Graveside funeral services and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Kemble Cemetery on state Route 154, Elkton, with Pastor Kathy Barton officiating.
