- Trooper Brian Kavanagh, 40, was westbound on East Pershing in Salem and stopped his cruiser at the intersection with Park Avenue at 7:42 p.m. Nov. 19. He was followed by a vehicle driven by Andrew S. Klein, 22, Monroe Street, Salem. Initially, Klein reportedly attempted to pass the cruiser using the eastbound lane, but then stopped and backed up returning to the westbound lane. Klein then began moving toward the cruiser and struck it from behind. Kavanagh, who had unbuckled his seat belt and had one foot outside the cruiser, which was in park, was treated for minor injuries at Salem Community Hospital. Klein was cited with assured clear distance.
