Food Pantry fund raiser is today

SALEM - Those planning to attend the "Rocking for a Cause this Season" fund raiser today for the Salem Community Food Pantry are reminded to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the food bank for local distribution.

The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Salem Little Quakers Hall, 1688 S. Lincoln Ave. Food, snacks, mix and ice will be provided.

Cost is $7 per couple or $5 per person.

A silent auction will be held featuring donations from local merchants.

Music will be provided by Theaz Guyz. Members of the band are Tom Levak, Ed Baird, Doug Riley and Tim Callahan. For more information or to donate call 330-502-1642.

Santa Claus will visit Banquet in Salem

SALEM - Santa Claus will visit with children, after they eat their dinner, at the Banquet in Salem to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building.

The meal, sponsored by Pizza Hut in Salem and Columbiana, includes vegetable beef soup, pizza, salad, fresh fruit and assorted desserts.

Breakfast buffet planned at Masonic Building

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Dec. 22 at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St.

Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2.

The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.

SALEM -The Salem High School Class of 1955 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 26 at BB Rooners.

SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1954 plans to meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Dec. 27 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Library offering Freading eBook Service

COLUMBIANA - The Columbiana Public Library is now offering patrons the innovative Freading eBook Service from Library Ideas.

This service will increase the size and diversity of the library's eBook collection by offering access to tens of thousands of books, none of which requires the patron to wait in line to download. Unlike the Overdrive service, each book is always available.

Every week registered borrowers will have five tokens to download books for a two-week period. The number of tokens needed to download a book will vary with the newness of the book. Books can be renewed once. Unused tokens will accumulate for four weeks.

Freading has its own apps for the iPad and iPhone and for Android tablets and phones. It is also compatible with the Kindle Fire, Nook devices and Kobo devices Freading will supplement the Overdrive service that's been provided for patrons since 2008.

The library is also offering downloadable music from its website for free and has joined the Library Ideas Network that provides access to over three million songs including Sony Music's catalog of legendary artists.

The Freegal Music Service will increase the size and diversity of the library's music collection by offering access to more than 10,000 music labels from 60 different countries. Library patrons will be able to download three songs each week in the MP3 format.

Free mobile apps are available in the Apple App Store and Google Play.

United Local to host Christmas Concert

HANOVERTON - The United Local Vocal Music Department will hold its annual Christmas concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium.

Performing will be seventh and eighth-grade choirs, Touch of Gold, High School Mixed Chorus and Concert Choir and Flight. Admission is free. A cookie sale also will be held.

Children's Choir to perform at church

DAMASCUS-The children's choir of the Damascus United Methodist Church at 300 Valley Road will present the musical, "Meet Me at the Manger" at 10:10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. The musical is filled with many songs and soloists that help persuade the grouchy store owner, Mr. Herod, that wise men still follow Him today. New Christmas toys will be presented to a local charity. A cookie and punch reception follows.

The public is invited to the all-you-can eat breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Breakfast with Santa set at Salem VFW

SALEM-The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 892 Men's Auxiliary, located at 496 Arch St., is hosting a breakfast with Santa from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday. Haystacks, or a traditional breakfast of eggs, pancakes, hash browns, sausage patties, toast, orange juice and coffee, will be served. Cost is $4.
