GREENFORD - Trustees approved purchasing a refurbished Automated External Defibrillator for the fire department on Tuesday.
Fire Chief Todd Baird said the unit being replaced was purchased in 2002 for $16,000 and was inoperable. He said the cost of a new unit is almost $27,000.
Baird explained that $4,000 from an EMS equipment fund, $1,000 from the fire department memorial fund would leave a balance of $2,476 for trustees to contribute for the unit and they were looking at a one-year warranty.
The AED was important enough for the fire department to empty out the memorial fund to help pay for it, Baird noted.
Baird had other department housekeeping and advised trustees they were dropping the Verizon air cards that will save $86 a month. He also requested $900 for fitness tests for 20 firefighters at $45 each.
In other business, Police Chief Steve McDaniel said the department responded to 408 events and the vehicles clocked over 6,000 patrol miles in November.
The biggest thing going on, he said, was car versus deer accidents which were "up a little" otherwise "everything else is about the same."
Trustee George Toy said he received another complaint about trash on Garfield Road and McDaniel said he had not received a complaint adding that police needed to be able to prove it.
Trustee Chairman Mark Stepuk suggested that police could tell whoever it was that it was their garbage and McDaniel said they could get the garbage and look for names, but he still needed a report.
"But we have to be able to prove it," he said.
Also, Zoning Officer Bill Pitts said there was one building permit for a garage for November and said the burned-out property at the bottom of Millville Hill was scheduled for a hearing by the health board.
Pitts said permit fees totaled $9,249 for the year representing $1.8 million in property valuations.
Christmas tree recycling will begin Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the township cemetery at state Route 165 and Beaver Creek Road.
Trustees set the 2013 re-organizational meeting for 6:30 p.m. Jan 15, before the next regularly scheduled meeting.
