BELOIT - The West Branch Local school board Thursday night approved the retirement of schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Weingart under the retire-rehire program.
Weingart is set to retire on March 1 and be rehired March 2 to the same position on a two-and-half year contract. The contract will include a 10 percent pay cut and a salary freeze at $86,400 per year for the life of the contract.
The action will save the district an estimated $30,000 over the life of the contract.

"West Branch has offered the rehire-retire option to all staff members for the past several years," Weingart said. "Our school board has always seen the financial value in offering the retire-rehire option. The program has saved the district hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past decade. In this time of tremendous financial challenge, this is one tool that is available to public institutions to reduce payroll costs while retaining experienced staff members."
Weingart is in his ninth year as superintendent of West Branch Local Schools. He is the current president of the Ohio Association of Local School Superintendents, serves as a mentor to new superintendents through the Executive Coaching Program sponsored by BASA (Buckeye Association of School Administrators) and holds a position on the Board of Directors of the Mahoning County School Employee Insurance Consortium.
A 1971 graduate of West Branch, Weingart began his career with the district in the fall of 1995 as principal of West Branch Junior High and Damascus Elementary School, serving in that capacity until 2001. He also served as principal of the original Beloit Elementary School and Administrative Assistant for Curriculum and Testing for West Branch from 2001-2004.
"It is a very special privilege to be the superintendent of the district from which one graduated," Weingart said. "It has always been my hope and goal to complete my career in public education at West Branch. I appreciate the school board's willingness to consider this option."
In accordance with Ohio Law, the school board will post a 60 day notice of a hearing regarding the rehiring of the superintendent, with official action scheduled for Feb. 28.
