Prep roundup — Salem loses for second time is as many days 47-40 to Canfield

Canfield 47, Salem 40

SALEM - Salem's two games over the weekend couldn't have been more different. The only thing similar about both contests was the outcome.

While Friday saw the Quakers and Canton South Wildcats play a fast-paced, high-scoring affair, Saturday it was all about defense against visiting Canfield. Unfortunately for Salem, the Quakers fell to the Cardinals 47-40 suffering their second loss in as many days.

Salem led after one quarter 12-11 and was up 25-15 at the half. Canfield, however, used a 19-7 third quarter run and held off the Quakers in the fourth.

Leading Salem was Ryan Bush with 14 points.

Anthony Shivers added 13 and Max Wolfgang had nine.

For the Cardinals (8-1), Andrew Midgley paced the squad with 10 points. Jaret Vrabel added nine.

Salem (7-2) will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday in Alliance.

LISBON - Lisbon topped Canton Heritage Saturday 67-58.

Leading the Blue Deils was Josh Craig with 16 points and six rebounds. Austin Rutecki added 13 points, and Eric Walker had 12 points and six rebounds. Josh Liberati also had nine points and seven assists.

Lisbon (5-4, 3-2 ITCL Tier 1) hosts Springfield Tuesday.

West Branch 67, Minerva 40

BELOIT - West Branch's Pavin Heath led all scorers with 19 points as the Lady Warriors defeated Minerva 67-40 Saturday.

Brittany Bryte added 12 points and four steals, and Melinda Trimmer had 11 points and nine assists. Amanda Linhart also had eight points and seven rebounds.

Lorin Clark led Minerva (8-2, 3-2 NBC) with 17 points and seven rebounds.

West Branch also won the J.V. contest 42-29.

West Branch (9-1, 4-1 NBC) plays Wednesday at Alliance.

SALEM - Carrollton jumped out to a 16-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back beating Salem 69-42.

Ali Poole had a game-high 24 points for Carrollton.

For Salem, Megan Lehwald had 10 points. Katherine Stiff added eight and Tori Jones and Julia Dundon had seven each.

Salem (1-8) plays Wednesday at Marlington.

LISBON - United rolled up points in bunches in a 91-37 win over Beaver Local Saturday.

Emily Zehentbauer had 23 points, Mackenzie Gatchel added 17, Cassidy Yoder 15, and Sam Spitler and Courtney Hydrick had 12 each.

The United reserve also won 51-27, Sydney Moats and McKenzie Firth had 12 points each.

United (9-2, 5-0 ITCL Tier 1) hosts Jackson-Milton Monday.

NEW WATERFORD - Newton Falls topped Crestview 44-31 Saturday. Brooke Barreca paced Newton Falls (10-1) with 17 points.

For Crestview, Ashley Harrison had 13 points. Morgan Newbauer and Anna Hardenbrook had six points each.

Crestview (9-4, 4-1 ITCL Tier 1) hosts South Range Monday.

COLUMBIANA - Columbiana nearly hit the century mark in a 91-34 win over East Palestine.

Leading the Lady Clipper was Khylea Fullum with 31 points. Bailey Mook added 17.

For East Palestine, Brooke Gedeon had seven points.

Columbiana won the reserve game 43-26. Lauren Schlueter had 13 points for Columbaina. Abby Fuller had nine for East Palestine.

Columbiana hosts McDonald Monday.

Junior High Basketball

United vs. McDonald

HANOVERTON - The United seventh grade girls defeated McDonald 29-19. High scorers for United were Molly Briceland with 12 and Hannah Mix with six.

The eighth grade also won 34-15. Leading United was Mariah Eisenbraun with nine points, Taylor Miller with eight and Lindsey Donato with six.
