HILLBILLY HOUNDS

January 9, 2013
Salem News
These whimsical “Hillbilly Hounds” figurines, manufactured by the Chic Pottery Co. of Wellsville in the 1940s, were recently donated to the Museum of Ceramics in East Liverpool. The 11 molded ceramic dogs and two novelty items — a fire hydrant and a tree stump — appear to be a complete set, museum Director Sarah Webster Vodrey said. They were donated by former East Liverpool resident William Harvey, the son of Chic Pottery founder Dana Knowles Harvey. The pottery was founded around 1937 and operated through the mid-1950s, moving production to Zanesville, Ohio, in 1945, Vodrey said. The rare figurines are part of the museum’s permanent collection and may be put on display at some point. (Photo by Stephen Huba)
