SALEM - Francis Joseph Horning, 90, of Salem passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Aultman Compassionate Care Center.
He was born Feb. 7, 1922, to his parents, the late, Arthur and Hilda Horning.
He served six years in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was assigned to the cargo ship, the USS Prentiss and was in several battles including Okinawa. He received his bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University and worked many years as an engineer for Blaw-Knox in Ellwood City, Pa. Francis was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather. His hobbies were challenge level square dancing, traveling, and history.
Besides his parents, Francis was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Radler; and three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Vincent Horning; a son, Joseph Horning and a grandson, Jeffrey Bird.
Francis is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Therese Horning; a daughter, Candace Bird (Michael Krouse); grandchildren, Jennifer Bird and Jack Bird; a sister, Mary Whiteleather; a brother, Paul (Peg) Horning and numerous nieces and nephews.
A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb 2, 2013, at Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel.
