SALINEVILLE - Members of the village's Board of Public Affairs are getting an increase in pay.
"These guys are putting in some long hours, I think they should be paid the same as council - $20 per meeting." said councilman Tom Hays during Tuesday's village council meeting.
Hays cited the extensive work done by the BPA members to keep the village's problematic sewage treatment plant operational and finding an operator for the facility.
Councilman Rick Beadle questioned if it was within the authority of the council to determine the pay of the BPA, contending that the BPA was a "separate entity."
Mayor Mary Smith advised council the BPA's wage was set by a past village ordinance. When asked who was in charge of setting the BPA's wages, village solicitor Andy Beech said he was unsure, however, he suspected council oversaw the wages.
He told council he would check the statute and begin drafting an ordinance if he found that it was within council's power to do so.
Hays questioned former BPA member Bridget Roberts, who was present at the meeting, as to how many times per month the BPA typically meets. She responded there are usually two BPA meetings per month, however, they sometimes meet for special meetings.
Beech reminded council that special meetings count as meetings and will require the BPA members be paid. This raised the question amongst council as to whether or not BPA members should be paid for all meetings, including special meetings.
"I don't think they'll abuse it." said Hays, referring to the fact that BPA members can call special meetings. Council made a motion to begin drafting an ordinance to increase the BPA's pay to $20 each meeting.
All three BPA spots are up for election in November. With the resignation of Roberts last month, the BPA currently consists of President James Brammer and Vice President Bud Taggart.
The village is still accepting letters of interest to fill the empty position.
