WASHINGTONVILLE - Village council members will be assessing the conditions of alleyways and prioritizing them for a summer repair program, Council President Ramona Custer said Wednesday.
Maintenance of the alleys was discussed during Monday's regular meeting.
Custer obtained street maps from the Columbiana County engineer's office that Street Committee Chairwoman Becky Vignon requested last month and Custer expects to have a list of streets prepared for a March 21 meeting with the engineer's office.
"We need to find the worst ones," she said.
Council is also looking at grant money for three projects that Councilman Jim Smith addressed last month.
Custer said estimates and two options for grant money and/or a low-interest loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission were presented by a New Philadelphia regarding the low water pressure issue on the east end of town.
Park improvements could be funded with grant money from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, she said, adding that further discussions on what is available and what the village can afford and duration of the payments will be necessary.
At council's Feb. 18 meeting, Smith said he was looking for playground equipment for the park while Mayor Will Jones expressed interest in a basketball court that could generate money for the park through tournament play.
"Technically we don't have a lot of money to do anything with the park," Jones said at the time. "That's why I wanted a basketball court to raise money."
Councilwoman Theresa Allison said that during the preparation of the grant application they could find out where the property line on the park ended.
Smith is also looking to obtain money to paint the bridge leading to the waste water treatment plant that was built without being painted.
He obtained estimates last year that ranged from $30,000 to around $100,000 to have it scraped and painted.
Last month, he said it might be difficult to secure grant money since the bridge is not considered a public highway but is more of an access road.
