LISBON - The Salem man accused of sexually related actions with a 5-year-old girl was found competent to stand trial on Monday.

A May 7 jury trial was set for Roger Gonda, 65, Franklin Street, Salem, who is charged with importuning and two counts of gross sexual imposition. Court documents allege Gonda had sexual contact with a 5-year-old girl on July 29 when she was seated on his lap. He also allegedly graphically told her about sexual acts he wanted to do with her on that date.

Gonda reportedly had access to the child through his association with the Southeast Friends Church in June and July of 2012.

Judge C. Ashley Pike reported the results of a competency evaluation requested on Dec. 18 came back and found Gonda was able to understand the nature of court proceedings. Additionally, it was found he will be able to assist in his own defense.

Gonda appeared in custody and even remarked to his defense attorney Charley Kidder that he is adjusting well to his incarceration and really likes the food.
