PERRY TWP. - Winter may appear to be over, but Perry Township officials have already started planning for the next snow season.
Trustees agreed Monday to participate in the 2013-2014 salt program, with plans to order 350 tons of salt for next year.
When asked if that would be enough, road supervisor Darreck Farrell said he ordered 300 tons of salt last year. Under the program, they have to take at least 80 percent of their order throughout the winter, but they can go as high as 120 percent of the order if necessary.
He said he just ordered another 120 tons of salt out of last year's order to reach the 120 percent mark because he heard the price may go up next year.
This past season, the township used 120 tons of salt on the roads. He explained the road crew uses a mix of salt and small gravel, with about 1/3 salt and 2/3 gravel.
In other business, trustees hired Shawn Butler as a part-time road department worker at a rate of $12.50 per hour for up to 30 hours a week. Trustees also noted a list of roads for line striping this year will be sent to the Columbiana County Engineer's office.
Fiscal Officer Susan Johnston noted the Painter Road/Brooklyn Avenue and Depot Road sewer extension project is expected to begin construction May 1 with a completion date of Sept. 30. Columbiana County Commissioners awarded the contract for the project to the lower bidder, Waugh Excavating, for $248,838.
In other announcements, Trustee Don Kendrick said eight building permits have been secured so far this year, with four this month. He said at least two of those permits this month had to be caught, meaning the project was started before securing a permit and Kendrick went to the property owner. Property owners must get a building permit before starting any projects, he said, such as new windows or a new roof.
The township fire department will hold a pancake breakfast/open house from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at the north station on North Ellsworth Avenue. Plans call for live demonstrations of equipment and for Lifeflight and ambulances to also be on hand.
The cost of tickets for the pancake breakfast will be $6 for adults, $4.50 for children ages 6 to 13 and children 5 and under free.
Trustees have changed the date of their next meeting to 6:30 p.m. April 29.
