Honor students show off model of SR?offices

BEAVER TOWNSHIP- The ninth-grade honors geometry class at South Range Local High School Monday night presented the school board with a scaled replica of the new board offices facility.

At the board's regular meeting, 14 of the 20 class members unveiled an exact replica model scaled to size in every detail of the facility, a culmination of a project-based lesson on proportions and ratios.

According to teacher Nick Haught, the students chose to design blueprints as an example of proportions and ratios and then created models of the blueprints to propose to the school board last month. After presenting the individuals models, the students joined together to create the scaled model Monday.

Haught said the students took two days to develop their individual blueprints in class then three weeks to build. For the replica the students spent one day in class and two days after school to create, he said, with everything made to scale, even down to the refrigerator and waste baskets.

The students told the board that they preferred the project-based learning and noted the teamwork necessary to complete the projects.

"To complete a task as large as this, we needed to pull together as a class and get everyone involved," said Ben Stebleton.

"There was a lot of trial and error," added Molly Pierson. "We had to learn from our mistakes to make the final outcome."

Board President John Fromel told the students that the project is a good example of what they will face in their future occupations- the need to keep the end goal in mind, know what they can bring to the table and respect for what other team members have to offer.

Also at the meeting, the board recognized the Academic Challenge team that went undefeated and won the county tournament this year. The team will travel to the national competition in Atlanta Memorial Day weekend. The team consists of Brianna Priplipsky, Christian Moore, Myam Moore and Keith Baer, and is coached by Bonnie Molnar.

The next board meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. May 20.

in the K-12 campus band room.
