SALEM - Thomas John Barrett, 82, of Salem, Ohio, died at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at the Salem Community Hospital.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Jan. 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Marguerite (Gertig) Barrett.
He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1956 with a BBA degree and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Tom was a salesman for New Idea Farm Equipment for over 30 years, served as Salem director of public safety for eight years and president of Salem City Council for two years. He was a life member of the Independent Hose Company, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #305, VFW Post 892, and a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joan (Dorn) Barrett, whom he married Aug. 12, 1954; nine sons, Mark (Cindy) Barrett of Salem, Michael (Jane) Barrett of Zionsville, Ind., Terence (Marene) Barrett of Chandler, Ariz., Patrick Barrett of Sacramento, Calif., Stephen Barrett of Salem, Timothy (Valerie) Barrett of Seaside, Calif., Jon (Julie) Barrett of Barnard, Vt., Kevin (Pamela) Barrett of Salem, and David (Kelly) Barrett of Carmel, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Felicity, Ryan, Matthew, Julie, Marshall, James, Katlyn, Jacob, Brian, Thomas and Andrew; and four great-grandchildren.
His sister, Sue Barrett, preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at the St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Robert Edwards officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at Hope Cemetery with military honors provided by the Salem Honor Guard.Donations in his memory may be made to Our Lady's Purse, St. Paul Catholic Church, 935 E. State St., Salem, Ohio 44460.
