Leetonia Arthur M. Detrow, 91, formerly of Woodville Road in Leetonia, passed away Friday evening at Parkside Health Care Center.
He was born on Dec. 22, 1921 near Leetonia, the son of Harvey and Vertie Metzler Detrow.
A graduate of Fairfield School, Arthur attended Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas for a year before returning to the area. He farmed most of his life, and had also worked at the local Sunshine Feed Store and Columbiana Pump Company of Columbiana. He was a school bus driver for Fairfield Waterford School District. He worked at Fairfield Machine Shop, retiring in 1986.
He was very active in the "Self-Help" gift shop along with his wife, Lucille. Arthur married Lucille Nov. 29, 1941. Together they were very involved in the Leetonia Mennonite church ministry. Arthur served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and was a church elder for 18 years. Lucille and Arthur served as church janitors for 20 years.
He enjoyed making comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee and legend has it he brought his precision as a machinist to the craft. His homemade applesauce was always a crowd pleaser, especially with his grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memory his three sisters, Mildred Grim of Poland, Marie Kurtz of Columbiana, and Doris (Glenn) Yoder of Goshen, IN; one daughter, Darlene (Gary) Martin of Leetonia; four sons, Ralph (Kathy) Detrow of Dalton, OH, Ron (Jan) Detrow of Boardman, David (Charmaine) Detrow of Harrisonburg, VA, and Paul (Donna) Detrow of Huntsburg, OH; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Florence Lucille Detrow, who passed away Sept. 30, 2010, and a sister, Dorothy Kauffman.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30 at Leetonia Mennonite Church, with Pastor Phil Slabaugh officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, April 29 at Leetonia Mennonite Church, 764 Columbia Street, Leetonia, OH. The family will also receive friends an hour prior to the services on Tuesday, April 30 at the church.
