GOSHEN TWP. - Officials weren't releasing any information Sunday regarding the victim of an apparent fatal fire at a single-story home on South Pricetown Road, also known as state Route 534 late Saturday night.

Rick Jamrozik, an investigator with the Mahoning County Coroner's Office who responded to the scene of the fire, said he expected an autopsy to be completed and the name released today. The State Fire Marshal's Office is also investigating.

Lt. Bill Hofmann of the Damascus Fire Department said they received the call at 11:45 p.m. Saturday to respond to a house fire at 12061 S. Pricetown Road, which is owned by David Kidd.

"Everyone was in bed sleeping when the smoke detectors woke them up," Hofmann said.

Kidd and two other family members were on the first floor and escaped. The victim, described as a relative of the homeowner, was found in the basement.

Hofmann said when firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the residence and fire showing from the basement. They launched an inside attack and extinguished the fire.

He said the State Fire Marshal was ruling the cause of the fire as undetermined until receiving the autopsy report and further investigation. He couldn't say where the fire started. Goshen Township Police were also on the scene, along with Green Township and Beloit fire departments for mutual aid. The American Red Cross also responded.

Damascus firefighters remained on the scene until 5:31 a.m. Sunday. Hofmann said he couldn't remember the last time the department handled a fatal fire.
