'Heads Above the Rest' recognition is today
LISBON - The Columbiana County Educational Service Center will host its annual "Heads Above the Rest" Senior Honors Recognition Brunch and awards recognition today at the Salem Golf Club.
Breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m. followed by the program. The 16 honorees are seniors from Columbiana County public high schools who scored above the 97th percentile on national college entrance exams: e.g., the SAT or the ACT.
The following students will be recognized and awarded a plaque of achievement: Yasmeen Erritouni, Beaver Local; Kyle Bryan, Victoria Drago, Reid Fleeson and Sarah Fortenberry, of Columbiana; Andrew Martin, Nick Harris and Lacey Hutchman, East Liverpool; Dan Dodge, East Palestine; Gabrielle VanScoy, Leetonia; William Erskine and Katherine Stiff, Salem; Mariah Powell, Southern Local; Zarah Strong and Kari Hart, United Local; and, Ryan Dalrymple of Wellsville.
Students will be introduced individually to the audience and share what they plan to do after graduating from high school. Parents, as well as superintendents, principals and guidance counselors will join the ESC Staff in honoring these outstanding young people. Principal, Dr. Joseph Shivers, Salem High School, will address the students and their guests.
Also being honored at this event are 17 Star Educators who were named as having had the greatest influence upon last year's "Heads Above the Rest" students.
Family Video rewarding As on report cards
SALEM - Family Video in Salem is again offering its Report Card "A" program.
Students may present report cards to the Family Video store, 120 N. Lincoln Ave. For each final "A" or equivalent mark earned by students in core courses from kindergarten through college, Family Video will reward students with a free movie or game rental. Core courses include math, language, reading, history, geography, science and spelling classes. Each voucher can be renewed for any new release movie with a "split' sticker on it and all video games.
The free rental is available through June 30. The Report Card "A" program is a 30-year tradition at Family Video and not affiliated with any particular school or school district.
Beginning today, Family Video in Salem is presenting Teacher Thursdays. During each Thursday in May, teachers may present a school ID and rent any five-night new release and get a second five-night new release for free.

Armed Forces Day will be celebrated
NEWELL, W. Va. - The Tri-State Genealogical and Historical Society's Armed Forces Day celebration and open house is slated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 at Wells High School, 717 Washington St., Newell. Attendees are asked to bring photographs of family members who served in the military.
CCCTC offering 'GED Fast Camp'
LISBON - The GED test is changing in January 2014. The cost will jump from $40 to $120.
In order to get as many people through as possible before that time, the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center is offering a free "GED Fast Camp" from June 10-27 in Lisbon and at the Broadway Professional Building in East Liverpool. To signup call 330-424-9561 Ext. 190.
Safe Land/SafeGulf certification available
LISBON - The Columbiana County Career Center's Adult Education is now offering SafeLand/SafeGulf to any current adult students with an interest in working in the gas and oil industry.
The certification provides an awareness level to students that is needed prior to working in the industry.
The cost is $285 but will be offered gratis to currently enrolled students. The course will be offered to the general public this fall in the fall course catalog. It is 12 hours in length and can be completed in two days of training.
Salem Saxon scholarships being offered
SALEM - Application forms for the Salem Saxon scholarships are now available in the guidance offices at Salem High School, West Branch High School and United Local High School.
All students who meet eligibility are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and plan to attend or be enrolled in a post high school educational program in the fall of 2013.
Applications may also be requested by calling Barbara Spack at 330-337-7487. The completed scholarship applications and attachments are due no later than May 31 and scholarship awards will be presented on July 12 at the Salem Saxon Club.
This will be the 28th year that scholarships have been awarded to high school graduates. Trustees of the scholarship trust fund are Sam McKinney, Hilda Spack, Barbara Spack, and Art Maroscher, and Geoff Goll, legal counsel. Memorial donations are welcome and may be mailed to the Salem Saxon Scholarship Trust Fund, c/o Art Maroscher at P.O. Box 720, Salem 44460.
New Alexander Christian serving dinner

Drive-thru chicken dinners sold today
SALEM -"Chicken on the Run" drive-thru chicken dinners will be sold from 4 to 6 p.m. today, until sold out, at the First United Methodist Church, 244 S. Broadway Ave.
The meal includes a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a brownie. Cost is $7.
Sewer line extension work begins today
SALEM - Sanitary sewer line extension work begins today on Painter Road, Brooklyn Avenue and Depot Road.
Traffic will be maintained during construction, but delays may occur. Construction, provided by Waugh Excavating LLC of Crown City, may take four to five weeks. The projected cost is $245,838.
OSHA class offered May 2, 9 at CCCTC
LISBON - A 10-hour OSHA class is being held from 4 to 9:30 p.m. May 2 and 9 at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center for anyone who would like to earn a 10-hour OSHA card.
