LEETONIA- The Leetonia school district is tentatively projected in the black for the entirety of the newest five-year financial forecast.
The school board Tuesday night approved the updated forecast submitted by Treasurer Jennifer Coldsnow which projects a cash balance of almost $925,000 this year and over $905,000 next year, and $16,000 in 2017.
Coldsnow said the forecast could change once the governor's biennial budget is approved in July. She attributed the positive cash balance to staff attrition, increased enrollment and a gas lease signing bonus.
Schools Superintendent Rob Mehno commended staff members for helping stave off a deficit the past few years.
"They've gone above and beyond as cuts have been made and (retired or resigned) staff members not replaced," he said. "They've taken on additional duties and classes and have helped make this possible."
In other business the board approved an increase of 5 cents in paid lunch prices at the elementary and middle school to $1.75 and $2, respectively. High school prices will remain at $2.05. Reduced and free lunches and breakfast prices will not be affected.
The board also accepted donations of $100 from Pat and Dorothy Mango, $200 from the American Legion and $50 from John Haller to the weight room project; $250 from Thomas Woods for the Woods Family Scholarship; and $200 from Paul Sevenich for the Baseball and Softball Supplemental funds.
The board also approved the use of the building and fields to host the DCI Drum Corp International from midnight to 5 p.m. June 22.
Also at the meeting the board recognized senior Gabrielle VanScoy who was recently honored at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center's "Heads Above the Rest" breakfast for scoring at least a 30 on the ACT College Entrance Exam.
The board also recognized the Top 10 students in the 2013 graduating class: Brandon Dattilio, Ian Stecker, Luke Nappi, Delaney Gardner, Ashley Mesmer, Jessica Russell, Miranda Baker, Bethany Basich, Nicole Halverstadt and Zachary Renier.
