FOP to host patrol chief at memorial ceremony

SALEM - The Fraternal Order of Police Quaker Lodge 88 in Salem will host its annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service in observance of National Police Week at noon Thursday, May 23 at the Taste of Country restaurant in Lisbon.

Guest speaker for the event will be Colonel John Born, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Born participated at the National Police Week observance held in Washington, D.C. last week.

Born is a past winner of the District Trooper of the Year Award and is a two-time winner of the Lisbon Post Trooper of the Year Award. He also received the J. Stannard Baker Award of Excellence in highway safety from the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 1999.

Ohio State Trooper Superintendent Col. John Born

Born currently serves on the IACP Highway Safety Committee, and is chairman of the IACP North Central Committee and the Traffic Officer Safety Subcommittee, is chairman of the Ohio LEADS law enforcement communications network, first vice chairman of Operation Lifesaver and a commissioner on the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission.

Born graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's of social science in deviant behavior. He has completed the FBI National Executive Institute program, governance training at Harvard Business School and leadership training at the United States Army War College.

Lodge president Lt. Don Beeson of the Salem Police Department will preside at the service, with an invocation to be delivered by the Rev. James Lang of St. Michael Church in Windham.

Special guests at the service will be Howard and Mary Kay Hartzell of Youngstown, parents of the late Officer Michael Hartzell, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2003 while serving with the Youngstown Police Department.

County Sheriff Ray Stone, Chief Rod Foley from the Youngstown Police, Chief Scott C. Griffith from the Alliance Police are also scheduled to attend.
