MUNCIE-Carson Weingart, a junior at Ball State University, recently won the annual Ball State University's concerto competition. The competition was held in January in Sursa Hall for the Performing Arts on the Ball State University Campus.

Weingart, a piano performance major at Ball State, was among 23 undergraduate students who competed in the annual event. He performed the Second Piano Concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. As winner of the concerto competition, Weingart performed in concert with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 28. He traveled to Japan for 10 days this month to perform a solo recital at Mukogawa Women's University in Osaka. He stayed with a Japanese family and spent the week studying piano with teachers at the university and traveling around the country.

A 2010 graduate of West Branch High School, Weingart is the son of Dr. Scott and Shelley Weingart of Salem. He recently performed a solo piano concert on March 3 as part of the Alliance Area Concert Series.

At Ball State, Carson also majors in business administration and is a member of the Honors College. He is the president of Student Honors Council, serves on the Honors College Advisory Board, and is the vice president of the collegiate chapter of Music Teachers National Association. He and fellow West Branch graduate, Jarred Walker, performed a duo piano concert for an audience of over 600 people in the West Branch Community auditorium. The concert, which featured piano arrangements of popular music and famous songs from movies and Broadway, was presented in the style of the legendary piano duo, Ferrante and Teicher.

This summer, an all-new concert, "An Evening with Carson and Jarred, Act II," will be presented at 7 p.m. June 20 and 21 in the West Branch Community auditorium. Admission to the concert is $5, with proceeds benefiting the West Branch Alumni Association. CDs will also be on sale at the concert.
