West Branch board approves 5-year forecast

BELOIT- The West Branch school board Thursday night approved the revised five-year financial forecast submitted by Treasurer Daniel Telzrow.

The forecast shows an ending cash balance of $2.3 million this year and $1.8 million in 2014. The balance drops to $775,000 (equivalent of one payroll and one medical payment) in 2015 before entering a deficit of $634,000 in 2016 and $2.8 million in 2017.

Superintendent Dr. Scott Weingart said following the meeting that the forecast is similar to other districts in the area.

In other news, Weingart reported on Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) results from recent testing of sophomores. He said passing percentages have increased in all testing areas since 2010-2011 except science, which has remained the same. This year 94 percent passed reading, 97 percent passed math, 95 percent passed writing, 86 percent passed science and 92 percent passed social studies, an increase of 11 percent since 2010-2011.

Under personnel, the board approved three-year administrative contracts to Brian Coffee as high school principal, Tim Fairfield as assistant high school principal, Roger Kitzmiller as middle school principal, Sherri Kitzmiller as director of special services, Aaron Walker as assistant middle school principal, Lorrie Weingart as director of food services and Jim Graham as technology coordinator. The board also hired as 2013 summer Success by Six administrators Aaron Walker, Amy Mabbott and Matthew Manley.

The board also hired for the 2013-2014 school year Barbara Cackovic as a treasurer's assistant effective June 6, Cori Sands as secretary at Damascus Elementary, Kim Sabatine as secretary at Knox Elementary, Elizabeth Hall as secretary in the Special Education Department, Jennifer Gonda as a behavior specialist (pending certification) and Jodi Plocher as a library aide.

Also at the meeting the board approved an agreement with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center to provide services for the 20132014 school year at an estimated cost of $405,982 (prior school year estimated cost was $477,606); and approved Snyder Agency Inc. (National Guardian Life Insurance Company) as the student insurance provider for the 20132014 school year.

The board also accepted the following gifts and donations: WB Band Boosters for WB Band Three Day Trip, $20,438; MS PIE for MS technology, $5,000; MS PIE for MS Principal Fund (field trips), $1,050; Damascus PIE for Damascus Principal Fund (field trips), $10,000; Damascus PIE for Damascus technology, $4,237; anonymous to MS Principal Fund (Field Trip), $1,000; Linda Wallace for HS Student Council (Senior Citizen Dance), $50; WB Choral Parents for WB Musical (choreography "Hello, Dolly"), $878.84; Damascus Ruritans for boys' track, $200; anonymous for scholarship, $500; Medical Mutual of Ohio for scholarship, $500; anonymous for auditorium improvement, $150; Ron and Elaine Wagner for auditorium improvement, $250; Daniel J. Telzrow for auditorium improvement, $100; and community members for McVicker Scholarship, $750.
