Salem BOE hires special services director

SALEM- The school board Friday morning made a change in administration for next year.

The board hired of Kristy Erb as the director of special services on a three-year, 214-day contract at a salary of $68,000. She replaces the retiring Sally Mainwaring.

Erb brings two years of special education director experience at Sebring Local Schools.

"We are extremely excited and fortunate to have found Kristy and are very excited about the experience she brings here with her," schools Superintendent Tom Bratten said in a written release. "The interview team was very impressed with her qualifications and was very optimistic in hearing her visions of the programs and how they align with ours. We are looking forward to getting started with Kristy right away as there is much to be done in the summer."

Bratten also commended Mainwaring on her time at Salem.

"Sally will be sorely missed, not only as a director and an educator, but as a person of quality, integrity, and honor," he said. "She was the epitome of class and professionalism and I will miss her excellence every day."

In other business, the board hired Sarah Burntnett as a fourth-grade teacher at Reilly Elementary on a one-year limited teaching contract through the 2013-14 school year. She served the past school year as a Title specialist and will take over a position opened by an employee transfer. The board also hired Greg Steffey, who resigned as athletic director, as AP high school and junior high social studies teacher on a two-year limited teaching contract through the 2014-15 school year and Larry Goontz and Nicholas Deville as summer tech help effective June 3 pending BCI/FBI approval; and approved as summer school instructors Bill Miller, health; Aubree Horning, physical education; Elaine Habeger, curriculum recovery; Sue Wolfgang, curriculum recovery; Kera Lemasters, OGT Skills; Gary Goddard, OGT Skills; Ron Stratton, OGT Skills.

The board also approved one-year limited contracts for Debbie Baker as a full-time secretary and financial aid consultant and Deann Russell as a part-time secretary for the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing; and accepted the resignation of Lois Wagner, a 2.5 hour cafeteria worker at the high school effective May 20.

Also at the meeting, the board increased lunch prices for the coming school year by 10 cents to $2.35 and the a la carte prices by 5 percent, as required by the USDA. Breakfast prices will remain the same at 75 cents. The board also approved the bid of $44,000 by Duro-Last Roofing Inc. for the re-roofing of the high school science lab and Southeast Elementary School.

Additionally the board authorized a contract with The Nutrition Group to provide food services management from July 1 through June 30, 2014, and approved Mills Insurance Agency to offer student accident coverage for the 2013-2014 school year beginning Aug. 1 at no cost to the district.
