Winifred Jane Elder

COLUMBIANA- Winifred Jane Elder, 86, died at 5:10 am, Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center in Youngstown.

Mrs. Elder was born Jan. 29, 1927, in East Canton, a daughter of Lester and Ethel Welsh Martsolf, and had lived in this area most of her life.

Winifred was a registered nurse for many years working for Salem Community Hospital and Alliance Visiting Nurses. Winifred was a member and active at Grace Church in Columbiana. She was also a member and Past Worthy Matron of Alma Chapter #498 Order of Eastern Star in Sebring.

Winnie grew up singing with her sisters and continued her love of music in her church choir and trio. She was a Pittsburgh Steeler and Pirates fan for many years and was always present at her family's sporting events, band performances and other events. Her passion in recent years was her family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her, especially her husband, Norman F. Elder, whom she married Aug. 18, 1950; her daughter, Barbara (Delmar) Karlen of Salem; her two sons, Roger (Debra) Elder of Ruffsdale, Pa., and Gregory (Cheryl) Elder of Sykesville, Md.; her sister, Arlene (Louis) Farioli of Darlington, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Michele (Avi) Rodoff, Stephanie Bondoni, Joshua (Amanda) Elder, Rebecca (Jonathan) Byzon, Chad (Jamie) Elder, Daniel Elder, Jeffrey Karlen and John Karlen; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Gene O. Elder and Bradley L. Elder, and two sisters, Evelyn McRoberts and Jean Gwin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home in Columbiana with the Rev. Dr. Robert C. Joy officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery in East Palestine. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
