Cruisin' at Essex

June 20, 2013
Salem News

Essex I hosted its 6th annual Back to the 50s Cruise with about 80 street rods, hot rods and custom street machines entered for the "Resident's Choice" trophy on Wednesday. It's the first event of the 8th Salem Super Cruise and organizers at Essex I said it was the biggest turnout ever and overflow show-car parking across the street from the Bentley Drive facility had to be used. The Back to the 50s Cruise presented dash plaques to entrants, had a food concession while DJ's M&M from Lisbon played 50s era music. Baked goods were sold to benefit resident activities and there were giveaways. John Innella, 62, originally from Port Jervis, N.Y., is pictured checking out this Oldsmobile Rocket-powered 1929 Ford street rod owned by Robert Bush of Lisbon. The two-door "bucket" convertible was a four-door at one time. Innella said he was a resident at Essex I three years ago and just returned. The Salem Super Cruise kicks off downtown from 6 to 9 p.m. today with DJ Big Rick at the Broadway stage. (Salem News photo by Larry Shields)
