GREENFORD - Betty Mae (Evans) Maxwell, 89, died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday at the Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, Justin T. Rogers Care Center in Fairlawn, Ohio.
Born April 6, 1924, in Canal Fulton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Howard D. and Hulda J. (Hooley) Evans.
Mrs. Maxwell was a graduate of Columbiana High School and Baldwin Wallace College. For 18 years she was employed as a medical assistant for her brother's office, Dr. H. David Evans M.D., formerly of Salem.
Her hobbies included being an avid sports fan. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's sports events. She also enjoyed traveling and seeing many sites. She made many joyful fishing trips to Canada. She was a 4-H leader for over 30 years. She was a member of the Columbiana First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death on Dec. 20, 1995, by her husband, Charles J. Maxwell, whom she married on June 22, 1947.
Survivors include three sons, Charles R. (Bonnie) Maxwell of Columbiana, Dr. John S. (Catherine) Maxwell of Akron, Neil H. (Joann) Maxwell of North Lima; a daughter, Janet (Thomas) Carroll of Greenford; two brothers, Donald (Kay) Evans of Columbus and Dr. H. David (Allene) Evans of La Grange, Ky.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at her request at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home in Salem. The Rev. Carolyn Griffeth, interim pastor of the church, will officiate. No calling hours will be observed. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery.
