Quaker City Band will perform free concert at Memorial Park

SALEM - Quaker City Band will perform at 7 p.m. today at Waterworth Memorial Park. This concert is free, open to the public, and includes a variety of foreign music and composers from as far north as Finland and as far south as Cuba featuring selections from Les Miserables, a Spanish march and The Russian Sailors Dance.

The SQCB assistant director is Tyler Husosky, with Director Benjamin Ammon. Husosky is the director of bands at Champion High School and holds a bachelor's of arts in music education from Youngstown State University. He has performed with Youngstown Symphony, Greenville Symphony, W. D. Packard Band and Lowellville Mount Carmel Band. Guest conductors include Jennifer Mollenkopf and Robert Barnett.

Mollenkopf is director of bands for East Palestine and adjunct professor and lecturer at the University of Mount Union. She holds a bachelor's of arts in music education from Otterbein College and master's of arts in conducting from YSU. Barnett, director of Bands for West Branch Schools and principal timpanist for Youngstown Symphony and Packard Band, holds a bachelor's of arts in music education from Dana School of Music at YSU and master's of arts from Ashland University.

'Drive-by' chicken dinner will be served Thursday

LEETONIA The public is invited to a "drive-by" chicken dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, or until sold out, at the Leetonia United Methodist Church, 50 Lisbon St. Cost is $7.

The meals includes a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a brownie.

David Anderson HS Class of 1953 will meet Thursday

LISBON - The David Anderson High School Class of 1953 will meet for lunch at noon Thursday at the Taste of Country restaurant.

DAHS Class of 1962 will meet for breakfast

LISBON - David Anderson High School Class of 1962 plans to meet for breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Adele's Place.

Westville Lake hosting 'Sea of Lights Catfish Tournament'

BELOIT - Westville Lakes in Beloit is hosting its "Sea of Lights Catfish Tournament" from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth.

County EMA will conduct radio testing on Saturday

LISBON - Amateur radio testing technician through amateur extra will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency, 215 S. Market St. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Walk-ins will be accepted.

Quakertown Trolley will provide events transportation

SALEM - The Quakertown Trolley and United Quilt Guild will join forces this weekend, when the guild holds its bi-annual quilt show July 19-21, using the theme, "Underground Railroad Quilts." For more information on this three-day event visit www.UnitedQuiltGuild.org.

On Saturday, the Quakertown Trolley will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., making stops at the quilt show at the Salem Community Center on North Ellsworth Avenue, the Kiwanis Antiques in the Park at Centennial Park, and the Burchfield Homestead Museum on East Fourth Street.

There is no cost for this shuttle which will make the loop approximately every 20 minutes. The trolley may be boarded at the entrance to the park, in the parking lot at SCC and at the Burchfield Homestead.

Salem Underground Railroad tours are available at 3 p.m. Sunday. Reservations may be made by calling 330-337-6733 and leaving a message. Cost is $10 per person.

Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary scramble is Saturday

SALEM - Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary will conduct its fourth annual Gavin Ward Memorial Golf Tournament fund raiser on Saturday at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course, 2745 Grandview Road, Lake Milton. The registration fee is $65 per person and includes a golf cart, beverages, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The format is a four-person scramble. There will be a Chinese auction with sports autographed items from players such as Maurkice Pouncey, John Simon, Terry Francona and Nolan Ryan. Prizes will be featured on each hole.

The grand prize is a three-year lease on a 2013 Chevy Cruze which would be awarded to a player that achieves a hole-in-one on the eighth hole. Prizes are donated by Sweeney Chevrolet.

The golf tournament is named in honor of Gavin Ward, a special young volunteer at Alchemy Acres who passed away at the age of 12. Proceeds benefit the pets at Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary. For more information or tee times call the sanctuary at 330-332-4897.

Beaver Local Board of Ed will meet in special session

LISBON The Beaver Local Board of Education will meet in special session at 6 p.m. Monday in the administration building conference room. Board members will consider a recommendation for the guarantee maximum price for the new building site preparation. No other action will be taken.

Salem Library holding a Fairy House Building Program

SALEM - Salem Public Library is holding a Fairy House Building program at 6:30 p.m. July 25 at Pavilion #8 (near the duck pond) in Waterworth Memorial Park.

Participants in prekindergarten to sixth grade will use items found in nature to make the houses. Wood, rocks, leaves, flowers, nuts, feathers and other natural materials will be provided or you can bring your own items to create a perfect palace for a fairy to move right in.

This is a free program but space and supplies are limited. Pre-registration begins on July 18 in the children's department or by calling 330-332-0042 option three.

Horseshoes pitching contest planned at Guilford Lake Grille

GUILFORD LAKE A horseshoe pitching contest begins at 7 p.m. July 26 at the Guilford Lake Grille. Cost is $10. Sign-ups are available at the restaurant.

Former First National Bank employees will meet Aug. 5

SALEM - First National Bank former employees are invited to a get-together and coverdish at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the home of Luanne Cope, 33788 Winona Road.

LEETONIA The Leetonia High School Class of 1949 will meet for lunch at noon Aug. 7 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Salem iFest vendor spot, parade applications available

SALEM - Vendor spot and parade entry applications are still available online for the Salem iFest "Celebrating Your Heritage" celebration from noon to 10 p.m. Aug. 10 in downtown Salem.

The festivities include music and other varied entertainment, food vendors, numerous children's activities, an international display at the Salem Historical Society, a "Meet the Quakers Pep Rally" and the annual Salem Grande Parade. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to reserve a vendor spot and a parade entry by accessing the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce's website at www.salemohiochamber.org.

United Local Class of 2016 holding golf scramble Aug. 10

HANOVERTON - The United Local Class of 2016 will hold a golf scramble on Aug. 10 at Edgewater Golf Course. Registration is from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. followed by a shotgun start 10 a.m. Cost is $50 per person per four person team.
