Quaker City Band will perform free concert at Memorial Park
SALEM - Quaker City Band will perform at 7 p.m. today at Waterworth Memorial Park. This concert is free, open to the public, and includes a variety of foreign music and composers from as far north as Finland and as far south as Cuba featuring selections from Les Miserables, a Spanish march and The Russian Sailors Dance.
The SQCB assistant director is Tyler Husosky, with Director Benjamin Ammon. Husosky is the director of bands at Champion High School and holds a bachelor's of arts in music education from Youngstown State University. He has performed with Youngstown Symphony, Greenville Symphony, W. D. Packard Band and Lowellville Mount Carmel Band. Guest conductors include Jennifer Mollenkopf and Robert Barnett.
Mollenkopf is director of bands for East Palestine and adjunct professor and lecturer at the University of Mount Union. She holds a bachelor's of arts in music education from Otterbein College and master's of arts in conducting from YSU. Barnett, director of Bands for West Branch Schools and principal timpanist for Youngstown Symphony and Packard Band, holds a bachelor's of arts in music education from Dana School of Music at YSU and master's of arts from Ashland University.
'Drive-by' chicken dinner will be served Thursday
LEETONIA The public is invited to a "drive-by" chicken dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, or until sold out, at the Leetonia United Methodist Church, 50 Lisbon St. Cost is $7.
The meals includes a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Quakertown Trolley will provide events transportation
SALEM - The Quakertown Trolley and United Quilt Guild will join forces this weekend, when the guild holds its bi-annual quilt show July 19-21, using the theme, "Underground Railroad Quilts." For more information on this three-day event visit www.UnitedQuiltGuild.org.
On Saturday, the Quakertown Trolley will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., making stops at the quilt show at the Salem Community Center on North Ellsworth Avenue, the Kiwanis Antiques in the Park at Centennial Park, and the Burchfield Homestead Museum on East Fourth Street.
There is no cost for this shuttle which will make the loop approximately every 20 minutes. The trolley may be boarded at the entrance to the park, in the parking lot at SCC and at the Burchfield Homestead.

Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary scramble is Saturday
SALEM - Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary will conduct its fourth annual Gavin Ward Memorial Golf Tournament fund raiser on Saturday at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course, 2745 Grandview Road, Lake Milton. The registration fee is $65 per person and includes a golf cart, beverages, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The format is a four-person scramble. There will be a Chinese auction with sports autographed items from players such as Maurkice Pouncey, John Simon, Terry Francona and Nolan Ryan. Prizes will be featured on each hole.
The grand prize is a three-year lease on a 2013 Chevy Cruze which would be awarded to a player that achieves a hole-in-one on the eighth hole. Prizes are donated by Sweeney Chevrolet.
The golf tournament is named in honor of Gavin Ward, a special young volunteer at Alchemy Acres who passed away at the age of 12. Proceeds benefit the pets at Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary. For more information or tee times call the sanctuary at 330-332-4897.

Salem Library holding a Fairy House Building Program
SALEM - Salem Public Library is holding a Fairy House Building program at 6:30 p.m. July 25 at Pavilion #8 (near the duck pond) in Waterworth Memorial Park.
Participants in prekindergarten to sixth grade will use items found in nature to make the houses. Wood, rocks, leaves, flowers, nuts, feathers and other natural materials will be provided or you can bring your own items to create a perfect palace for a fairy to move right in.

SALEM - Vendor spot and parade entry applications are still available online for the Salem iFest "Celebrating Your Heritage" celebration from noon to 10 p.m. Aug. 10 in downtown Salem.

United Local Class of 2016 holding golf scramble Aug. 10
HANOVERTON - The United Local Class of 2016 will hold a golf scramble on Aug. 10 at Edgewater Golf Course. Registration is from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. followed by a shotgun start 10 a.m. Cost is $50 per person per four person team.
