SALEM - Louis Elliott Byland, 80, of Salem, died at 2:14 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Salem Community Hospital.
He was born April 11, 1933 in California, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Algernon and Mercedes (Elliott) Byland.
Before his retirement in 1998, he had been a pipe fitter for 30 years at General Motors-Lordstown and had previously been a pipe fitter at J&L Steel, Aliquippa Works for 20 years.
Lou was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus at St. Titus in Aliquippa, and served in the US Army during the Korean War as a corporal. He sang in the choir for many years and was an avid Steeler's fan.
His wife of 56 years, Eileen (Smith) Byland, whom he married July 5, 1957, survives him along with two sons, Elliott Byland of Cloverdale, Calif., and Mark Byland of Salem; two daughters, Davina (Jim) Miller of Salem and Gillian (Andrew) Gonci of Salem and seven grandchildren, Sean Brown, Jordyn Brown, Ryan Miller, and Taylor, Jakeb, Madison Gonci and Kade Byland; a great granddaughter, Marley; and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Joan Nolsheim, and a brother, Norman "Buck" Byland, preceded him in death.
A funeral mass will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013 at the St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Steve Wassie officiating. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home.
