EAST LIVERPOOL - The death of a Columbiana man in the creek at Beaver Creek State Park earlier this week remains under investigation, according to the county coroner's office.

The body of Jim Smith, 66, Columbiana-Lisbon Road, was found in the water about a quarter mile from the main park on Tuesday morning after he failed to return home the previous evening following a fly fishing trip to the park.

Coroner's investigator Sunny Bowers said Friday, "The (Ohio State Highway Patrol) troopers are still investigating, and there's not anything yet. It's still under investigation."

Bowers said her office has received some preliminary findings which cannot be released until the patrol's investigation is complete.

A massive search was launched by emergency personnel Wednesday night, including firefighters, EMTs, K-9 teams and helicopters, but Smith could not be located. Two teen-agers assisting the fire department in a canoe discovered his body in the water at about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Family members said Smith's brother had taught him fly fishing just recently and this was his second attempt.
