2013 Buy-Way Yard Sales under way

EAST LIVERPOOL - The 2013 Buy-Way Yard Sales on the Lincoln Highway are open today through Aug. 10. The city of East Liverpool has waived yard sale permit fees for those days. For more information call 419-468-6773 or to list your yard sale go to www.historicbyway.com.

New Waterford 1957 breakfast planned

NEW WATERFORD - The New Waterford High School Class of 1957 will meet for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Main Street Diner in Columbiana.

3 concerts remain at Firestone Park gazebo

COLUMBIANA - Three free summer concerts remain at Firestone Park gazebo in Columbiana. Concerts are slated from 2 to 4 p.m. and are family-friendly events. Scheduled to perform are:

Aug. 11: FeyFire, Celtic tales and tones instrumental and vocals, hosted by the Siembida and Boggs Philanthropic Foundation.

Aug. 18: The Figley Boys, a popular group playing a variety of 70s to today, hosted by the Fairfield Ruritan Club.

Aug. 25: Generations, multi-generational trio of yesterday and today, vocal/instrumental.

SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1948 plans to meet for breakfast at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Adele's Place.

Leetonia kindergarten orientation set

LEETONIA - Leetonia Schools is announcing kindergarten screenings, orientation and an open house. Kindergarten screening will be held on Aug. 13. Screenings are by appointment only, available by calling 330-427-6129 Ext. 2300.

Orientation will be held on Aug. 20 in the auditoria/cafetorium. Freshmen students are schedule to report at 9 a.m. followed by all fifth-grade students at 10 a.m. New students and parents are encouraged to attend.

Open house for the Leetonia K-12 Campus is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28.

SALEM - Girls of the Salem High School Class of 1957 plan to meet for dinner at noon Aug. 15 at Annabell's restaurant.

Craft Zentangle class set in Leetonia

LEETONIA - Kathie Sabatino is teaching a class on the craft Zentangle from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Leetonia Community Public Library. This will be the first in a series of classes on this type of craft, for ages 12 and up. The Zentangle art form and method was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and consists of making repetitive patterns to be used on greetings cards, fabric and more. Learn more at Zentangles.com. Christian music featured at Smokehouse

Joshua Dixon class lists ready Aug. 16

COLUMBIANA - Class lists will be posted after 4 p.m. Aug. 16 at Joshua Dixon Elementary School. Open house for all pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students (current and new) will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Students may bring their school supplies with them that night.

The first day of school for grades one to five is Aug. 26. The first day of school for kindergarten and preschool is Sept. 3. Kindergarten parents will need to sign their child up for Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy (KRA-L) testing when they attend open house on Aug. 21. KRA-L testing will be held Aug. 27-29 by appointment. Students on the free/reduced lunch program who qualified last year will be accepted this year until new applications are processed.

Southern Local 1979 reunion planned

Friends chicken barbecue fund raiser set

SALEM - The Salem First Friends Church at 1028 Jennings Ave. will host its 11th annual Friends Disaster Service chicken barbecue fund raiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 featuring live entertainment and a silent auction. Cost for the chicken dinner is $10. A children's hot dog meal is available for $4. All funds raised will help Friends Disaster Service as members continue to travel to serve those devastated by various disasters. Advance tickets are recommended and may be purchased at the church office. For more information call 330-332-0001. The event will be held indoors, rain or shine.

SCT plans 'Sleepy Hollow' auditions

SALEM - Salem Community Theatre will hold auditions for its main stage production of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Auditions for the Youth Theatre will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20. Director Elizabeth Britton is looking for youth actors in grades six through 12 for several roles in this classic Halloween tale. Interested actors should come prepared with a monologue of their choice no longer than one minute. Scripts are available. Call-backs, if necessary, will be held Aug. 21. Pasta benefit set at Salem Italian Club

SALEM - A pasta dinner benefit in memory of Kathy Johnson will be held from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Salem Italian Club, 250 Penn Ave. Cost is $8 per meal. There also will be a Chinese auction and 50/50. Proceeds will help with outstanding expenses.

Swimming sessions, lessons offered

SALEM - The Salem Community Center is offering another session of Learning to Accelerate your Potential for Swimming. Three age groups are available: Tiger Sharks (7 to 12), Great Whites (12 to 19), and adults. LAPS will run Sept. 9 through Dec. 19 with two sessions a week.

American Red Cross swim lessons are also available Oct. 5, every Saturday through Nov. 23. Cost is $70 for non-members and $55 for members. To sign-up call 330-332-5885.

'Bubble Fun' program set in Leeetonia

LEETONIA-Students entering preschool through sixth grade are invited to come to a "Bubble Fun" program from 1 to 2 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Leetonia Community Public Library.
