Winona FD holding breakfast, open house

WINONA - The Winona Fire Department is sponsoring an all-you-can-eat sausage and pancake breakfast and an open house from 7 a.m.-noon Saturday at the fire station located on Whinnery Road.

Cost is $6 per adults and $3 for children 3-10 years old. Children under 3 years eat free. Proceeds benefit upgrading of firefighting equipment.

An open house is also planned for public inspection and the displaying of department equipment. Displays will be set up with fire prevention literature and there will be outside displays.

Reflective house numbers signs will be sold. A local amateur radio club will have a communication trailer set up. There will be a mobile firefighter's rehab trailer and a squad from the Damascus Fire Department.

Dixon class lists will be posted Wednesday

COLUMBIANA - Class lists for Joshua Dixon Elementary School will not be posted Friday. They will be posted on the front door during open house which is scheduled Wednesday, Aug. 21.

NAMI Support Group will meet Monday

LISBON - NAMI of Columbiana County Support group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the multipurpose room at the Columbiana County Counseling Center, 40722 state Route 154.

The meeting is open to family members, friends, significant others and care givers of persons with a severe mental illness.

East Palestine MS open house scheduled

EAST PALESTINE - The East Palestine Middle School building will be open for parents and students to tour from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 and from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22

Students will have the opportunity to find their classrooms and put school supplies in their lockers. For additional information call 330-426-9451.

Recruitment for seasonal workers planned

LISBON - Recruitment for seasonal workers at Things Remembered Fulfillment Center are scheduled at the Mahoning County One-Stop Workforce Center, 141 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman.

The personalized gift retailer plans to hire 300 customer service representatives, engravers/monogramers and shipper/packers for its North Jackson distribution center.

Employees of Things Remembered enjoy steady hours, predictable schedules, quality training, weekly pay, 40 percent discounts on purchases and more. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be 18 years of age and able to work weekends and overtime. Positions are available on first and second shift and pay $8 an hour.

Recruiting events will be held Thursday Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Thursday Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Thursday Sept. 26 from noon until 4 p.m.; Thursday Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and on Thursday Oct. 31 from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The One-Stop Workforce System is a collaborative partnership that brings together more than 30 organizations, services and programs that help job seekers and employers.

The Mahoning County One-Stop and Columbiana County One-Stop are operated by the Mahoning & Columbiana Training Association.

SCC offering swimming program

SALEM - The Salem Community Center will conduct a session of L.A.P.S. (Learning to Accelerate your Potential for Swimming) starting Sept. 9.

The primary purpose of L.A.P.S. is to bridge the gap between swim lessons and competitive swimming strokes with an emphasis on promoting wellness and fitness through the sport of swimming.

Participants can look forward to building aerobic capacity and muscular endurance, improving strokes and fitness levels, building competitive skills, individualized goals based on skill level and friendly competition through optional time trials. Three age groups are available: Tiger Sharks (7 to 12), Great Whites (13 to 19), and Adults.

L.A.P.S. will run Sept. 9-Dec. 19 with two sessions a week. Tiger Sharks will practice Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m., Great Whites Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m.; and, Adults Tuesdays and Thursdays fro 6-7 p.m.

Dog pound offering $50 adoptions

LISBON - The Columbiana County Dog Pound will be offering $50 dog adoptions on any sponsored dog until Aug. 23.

The pound is filled to maximum capacity and may face having to euthanize for space if some dogs aren't adopted to make room for incoming dogs.

All dogs receive their rabies vaccine, parvo/distemper 7-way vaccine, de-worming, Spay or neuter and a current Ohio Dog license.

EP Sportsman's Club derby is Sept. 7

EAST PALESTINE - The East Palestine Sportsman's Club will sponsor its 22nd annual handicapped fishing derby on Sept. 7 at the club grounds on North Pleasant Drive.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Poles and bait will be provided.

Assistants will be available to help. Lunch and an awards ceremony will follow the fishing derby. The event is open to all handicapped residents of Columbiana County.

All Crestview HS alumni invited to picnic

COLUMBIANA - All Crestview High School alumni are invited to a picnic at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the home of Larry and Denise Webber, 45986 Carter Road, New Waterford.

United Band Boosters plan Alumni?Night

HANOVERTON - The United High School Band Boosters will be holding an Alumni Night on Sept. 27 when Springfield Local visits to play the Golden Eagles in varsity football.

Two practices are scheduled prior to the pregame performance. The first will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 at United High School.

The second practice will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 26. Both practices will be held in the band room/football field of United Local High School.

The United Band Boosters extends an invitation to any United Band Alumni who would like to participate in this event.

All participants must show up to both practices. Music will be handed out during the first practice, along with a T-shirt sign up.

The T-shirts will cost $10 for each participant. Those participating are asked to bring an instrument if possible. As many large instruments as possible will be provided.

"Street Scenes" will be filming in Salem

SALEM - "Street Scenes" will be filming the 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday Arby's Car Cruise.

Phillips Christian hosting drive-in movie

SALEM -Phillips Christian Church, 35459 Salem Grange Road, will host a drive-in movie at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Opening will be a "Veggie Tales" movie followed by the main movie, "Courageous."

Driving School will begin Sept. 3 at SHS

SALEM -The AAA Driving School will be starting fall classes at Salem High School beginning Sept. 3.

Classroom time will be 24 hours over eight sessions. Registration forms will be available at Salem High School or by calling 330-277-0052.

Lisbon TD Club hosting spaghetti dinner

LISBON - The Lisbon Touchdown Club is holding a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lisbon Lion's Club.

Tickets are $7 for an adult, $3 for children 12 and under. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Church holding community breakfast

DAMASCUS - Damascus United Methodist Church's monthly community breakfast will be from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to attend. Suggested donation is $5 per adult and $3 per child under 10. The church is located at 300 Valley Road.

Friend of the Banquet sponsoring meal

SALEM- The Friends of the Banquet will sponsor the next Banquet of Salem free meal from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building.

The menu will include penne pasta with meatballs, green beans, apple sauce, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and ice cream sundaes.

West Branch plans orientation, open house

BELOIT- West Branch Local orientation and open house for all fifth-grade students will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at the high school.

The orientation session will begin in the auditorium and move to the middle school for a building tour. Students will also receive their schedules and bus information.

Students are welcome to bring in their school supplies for their locker. Parents are encouraged to attend. Teachers will be present. Any schedules not picked up at the orientation will be mailed on Aug. 28.

Open house for all sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 27 in the middle school. Students will receive their schedules, bus information and meet their teachers.

Grade six students should report to the small gymnasium, grade seven students should report to the cafeteria and grade eight students should report to the large gymnasium. Students are welcome to bring in their school supplies for their locker.

Parents are encouraged to attend. Teachers will be present. Any schedules not picked up during the open house will be mailed on Aug. 28.

Church conducting school supply giveaway

LEETONIA - The Leetonia First United Methodist, 50 Lisbon St. is having a school supply giveaway from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday.

The event is for all Leetonia district students kindergarten through 12th grade. Students are asked to bring a report card.
