Iden Memorial a success

To the editor:

The 10th annual Lowell Iden Memorial breakfast and trap shoot was a big success.

I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank everyone who helped make this a great event.

Thank you to the following people and businesses who contributed to our Chinese auction: Salem Welding, Fred Baker, Salem Sparkle Market, Runzo's Outdoor Sports and Skeeter's Custom-Made Turkey Callers of Beloit. Frontiers Unlimited, JWB Supply Co., Sweet James Restaurant, Happy Clippers II of Lisbon, 4WD of Columbiana and Bob and Cindy Beach of Deerfield.

Basket winners were Sandra Smith, Donna Dailey, John Moser, Rob Burrows, Rex Allen, Ray Luxeuil, Tim Meeds, Laura Grimstad, Will Martsolf, Sue Iden, Josh Hill, Roberta Unkefer, Dan McIntosh, Sandra Campbell, Jay Klein, Rachel Dean and Harry Dailey.

The 50-50 was won by Sam Iden, son of Lowell Iden. He was generous enough to give his winnings to the Iden-Iler Scholarship Fund, so the scholarship honoring his father will continue in the future.

The Salem Hunting Club has awarded 28 Lowell Iden-Larry Iler Scholarships in the last 10 years. This scholarship was named in memory of two past presidents of the club. These men were honored for their tireless work and support over the years.

The 2013 scholarships this year were awarded to Haley Drake of Salem. She will be majoring in animal science at Ohio State ATI and Hannah Swope, also of Salem. Hannah will be majoring in wildlife resource management at Hocking College. Congratulations to both of you.

Thank you friends, family, members of the Salem Hunting Club, merchants, news media and anyone who contributed in any way to make this a very successful year.

Salem Hunting Club,

Thanks from X-Tra Mile Club

To the editor:

The members of the Salem X-Tra Mile Club would like to thank all who contributed toward making the 20th running of the Star Trax 5K Night Run an overwhelming success. At 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, a record-setting field of 875 registered runners raced out of Reilly Stadium onto the luminary-lined streets of Salem to benefit the Salem Senior and Junior High Schools boys and girls Cross Country and Track and Field programs.

This year's special 20th anniversary run honored the founders of the Salem X-tra Mile Club and the Night Run. The starting gun was fired by Bill Julian accompanied by his wife Pat and the other founders including John and Kay Oster, Ernie and Carol Rea, Bill and Linda Lutz, Terry and Bonnie Nye, Howard and Priscilla Somers and Renee Helmick.

The 20th anniversary of Star Trax was also recognized by special proclamations by Salem Mayor, John Berlin and U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson. Runners from as far as San Diego, Calif., participated in the race. The run features a United States Track and Field certified 5000 meter (3.1 miles) course making it one of the premiere races in northeastern Ohio. The addition of team scoring for 2013 for groups of five or more runners turned out to be very popular.

This year's men's overall race winner were former Salem High track and cross country standout Aimon Scullion, 26 now of Kent, Ohio, with record setting elapsed time of 14:44.98. Stephanie Case, 22 of Columbiana topped the women's field with a winning time of 19:07.15.

Most of all, thank you, to the community and residents living along the race course. Your enthusiasm and help in placing and lighting the nearly 800 candle-lit luminaries over three miles of race course race is what sets our race apart from the others. Runners return year after year because Salem's community support is #1 in the sport.

Team running in Salem has a rich history of excellence including seven state titles in cross country and most recently a state runner-up finish in track and field. We're very proud of our dedicated coaches and athletes and the X-Tra Mile Club is proud to support you. We pride ourselves in putting on what we feel is a premiere race designed around showcasing our beautiful community, hospitable citizens, and generous sponsors.
