School board to interview candidates for open seat

August 28, 2013
By MARY ANN GREIER , Salem News

SALEM - Salem school board members will interview six candidates tonight for the open spot vacated by their former colleague, Nick Bush, who resigned earlier this month to relocate for business.

The board is scheduled to meet in special session at 6:15 p.m. at the administrative offices for the hiring of personnel, to discuss negotiations or bargaining sessions with employees and to conduct interviews for a new board member.

"We have to act in a fairly timely manner," Board President Andrew Null said.

By law, since the position of school board member is non-partisan, the job of choosing a replacement when there is a mid-term vacancy falls to the remaining board members. From Bush's resignation date of Aug. 13, the board has 30 days to fill the vacancy.

Null explained that nothing could be done in the first 10 days, so they made Aug. 23 the deadline for interested district residents to submit letters. All of the candidates either currently have or formerly had children attending school in the district.

The six candidates who submitted letters of interest included:

- Doug Moffett, a former teacher in the district and current Salem city employee.

- Brian Shockey, a sales engineer with Motor Systems Inc. of Milford and Salem Band Boosters president from 2010 to 2013.

- Ron Irey, in purchasing at Hunt Valve in Salem

- Angie Beck, a paralegal and office manager for attorney Brian Macala in Salem

- Tony Colian, owner of Colian Electric in Salem

- Sally Chappell, a former member of the Salem school board and former substitute teacher.

Bush's unexpired term expires on Dec. 31, 2015. Board members are paid $125 per meeting, with the number of meetings they can be compensated for capped at 20 per year.

Null said it's likely no decision will be made tonight.
