'Quakers for the Cure'
T-shirts offered at games
SALEM - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In support of this cause, the Salem High School sophomore class is selling "Quakers for the Cure" T-shirts. The class is donating $1 for every T-shirt sold, to The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. T-shirts may be purchased at varsity football games during September, or by calling Jennifer Polen at 330-332-2917. Both short and long sleeve T-shirts are available, as well as crew neck and hooded sweatshirts.
Activities offered for dogs, owners at HSCC?ARC
SALEM - Friday Night Football for you and your pet, Walk Nice and Tricks Class, Poochie Playtime and Open Dog Walking are all on the September schedule of events as released by the Humane Society of Columbiana County Animal Resource Complex (HSCC ARC). Open walking takes place from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. For $2 per session, owners can exercise their pet on leash in the 6,000 square foot climate controlled complex on rubber flooring. Three sessions of Poochie Playtime take place beginning at 2:30 on Wednesday for small dogs under 30 pounds and two sessions beginning at 5 p.m. for big dogs. Cost for Poochie Playtime is $5 per hour. Senior dog playtime is offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday for dogs over 7 years. Proof of vaccinations, rabies and spay/neuter must be provided with no exceptions.
A dog training fundraising raffle is under way for a $50 training certificate by The Learning Dog and Enrichment Center, Training Treats and Interactive Toys. Chances are $1 each or six for $5. The winner will be drawn at the close of the Columbiana Street Fair on Saturday where HSCC will participate in the commercial tent.
ARC is located at 721 E. Pidgeon Road (state Route 45 bypass) in Salem and specializes in dog exercise and training, pet care education, interactive toys and pet resource information and is operated by the HSCC. Reservations for private pet parties and events are now being accepted. Additional activities are scheduled weekly. Community Center to host diabetic preventative program
SALEM -The Salem Community Center will be hosting FIT IDEAS (Fighting Inactivity Through Improving Diet, Awareness and Support). This pre-diabetic and diabetic preventative program will cover the following topics: calorie education, portion size, carbohydrate counting, effect of food on blood glucose levels, diabetic meal preparation, exercise choices and how exercise effects blood glucose levels. This three week program will be held on Tuesdays, Oct. 1, 8 and 15 at the Salem Community Center. This program is sponsored by Dreamfields Pasta, Salem Community Hospital and Insulindependence.
