Warrior Wipeout to raise funds for technology

September 18, 2013
By KEVIN HOWELL , Salem News

BELOIT- A group of parents is looking to raise money for technology at West Branch schools by hosting an obstacle course.

Warrior Wipeout, a 5K (3.1 mile) obstacle course race that combines rugged terrain and challenging obstacles, will be held at noon on Oct. 5 at the high school campus, 14277 S. Main St. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Cost is $30 for middle school students through adults and $25 for elementary students. Advanced registration is $25 for middle school students through adults and $20 for elementary students and includes a T-shirt.

Proceeds from the event will go toward technology at the district's schools, according to parent volunteer Francie Yarwood.

"The way the world is now, we need technology in the kids' hands," she said.

Yarwood said Warrior Wipeout is a mix of Warrior Dash, a 5K Mud Run put on by the Chicago-based Red Frog Events, and the ABC hit "Wipeout," a reality game show series in which contestants compete in what is billed as the "world's largest obstacle course."

With three children in the district- one each in high school, middle school and elementary- Yarwood said she was inundated by fundraisers.

"I thought it would be nice to have a district wide fundraiser," she explained.

Initially proposed about a year ago as a 5K run, Warrior Wipeout will be held completely on the middle and high school campus and will include woods, a pond and the track, as well as hay bales, tubes and tires. All materials have been donated by local organizations, businesses and individuals.

Registration and liability forms are available at warriorwipeout.org. Registration forms may be printed and mailed to the West Branch Middle School, c/o Francie Yarwood, 14409 Beloit Snodes Road, Beloit OH 44609.

Current sponsors include Bill and Jenn Benner (Dana, Brandon and TJ), RIC Technologies, Barnes Insurance Agency, Capital Title Services, Salem-Republic Rubber Company, Smith Landscaping Inc., Witmer's Feed & Grain, Ludt's Towing, The Stone Trough and the West Branch Alumni Association.
