Lepper Library hosting 'Live Pocket Pets'
LISBON - The Lepper Library's Children's Department will host a program of "Live Pocket Pets" at 6 p.m. Thursday. A variety of small animals will be brought by "L4 Pets," a Leetonia pet store. All ages are welcome to this free program.
Home Depot, AMVETS honoring vets
BOARDMAN - Boardman Home Depot and AMVETS Post 44 of Struthers are participating in a "Day of Service" to local veterans and military in need of minor home repairs on Thursday. Volunteers will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Home Depot store in Boardman then head out to their assignments. Volunteers will be working at four different homes in the Youngstown area.
The individuals receiving minor makeovers are Specialist Daniele Strickland, active duty, at 3622 Arden Youngstown; James Carter, an 82-year-old World War II veteran, at 530 Mistletoe, Youngstown; Danny Vaughn, a disabled Army veteran, at 3409 Hudson, Youngstown; and Dorothy Ellis, the widow of a retired Marine Gunny Sargent at 4624 Aspen Drive, Austintown.

Guilford Ruritans holding fish fry
GUILFORD LAKE - The public is invited to an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Guilford Lake Ruritan Club on Route 172 at Hanna Drive.
Second Harvest hosting food giveaway
SALEM - Second Harvest will conduct a food giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, 15096 W. Middletown Road. Those attending are reminded to bring baskets.
BL Boosters hosting 'Night at the Races'
LISBON - The Beaver Local Soccer Boosters will host its their annual "Night at the Races" at 7 p.m. Saturday at Turkana Golf Course. The adult only event is open to the public. There will also be a Chinese auction table. For more information call 330-382-1187.
Apple Butter Days scheduled Saturday
EAST PALESTINE - Apple Butter Days, sponsored by the East Palestine Area Historical Society, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Log Cabin on Bacon Avenue.
Homemade old-fashioned apple butter (sugar and sugar-free) will be sold for $4 per pint.
The historical society will also sell homemade bean soup, hot dogs and beverages. Demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day from local vendors. Antique cars and engines will be displayed.
Volunteers are needed beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 10 and asked to meet at the brick pavilion at East Palestine Park and bring a knife and pans.

Candidate forum planned Oct. 16

'Dislecksia"?The Movie" will be shown
YOUNGSTOWN - In honor of Dyslexia Awareness Month, the Children's Dyslexia Center of Youngstown joins cities and towns across the nation to host a theatrical screening of the documentary "Dislecksia: The Movie," strengthening public recognition of dyslexia as a learning difference, not a learning disability.
For 16 years, the Scottish Rite Masons have been committed to providing tutoring to dyslexic children at the center and will screen the documentary at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Cinemark Tinseltown Movie Theatre, 7401 Market St., Boardman. A question and answer discussion follows led by representatives of the center and Youngstown State University Education Department.
Beaver Twp. Crime Watch will meet Oct. 22
NORTH LIMA - In observance of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12, Beaver Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Russ Osborne will speak at the Beaver Township Police Crime Watch meting at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road.
Chief Osborne will discuss fire prevention tips and talk about the operations of the fire department. Local crime statistics will also be discussed.
Flowers, decorations need removed
SALEM - All flowers and decorations at the Woodsdale Cemetery must be removed by Nov. 8 or they will be discarded. Fall and winter decorations may be placed on the graves beginning Nov. 16.
Volunteer radio services being provided
YOUNGSTOWN - Members of the Western Reserve Amateur Radio Club (WRARC www.wrarc.net) will, once again, provide volunteer radio communications services for the annual American Diabetes Walk fundraiser sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org/stepoutyoungstown) from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 20.
The Western Reserve Amateur Radio Club holds its monthly club meeting the third Tuesday of each month at Davidson's Restaurant, 3636 Canfield Road, Canfield, beginning at 6 p.m. This month's meeting will be held on Oct. 15. The speaker for the meeting will be Ed Brannan who will speak about counter-terrorism. Guests and new members are welcome to attend.
The club will also be sponsoring the general class amateur radio license training classes on Wednesday evenings, starting Nov. 6 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. through Dec. 18 at ITT Tech, 1030 North Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Good Morning Canfield breakfast is Oct. 18
CANFIELD - Libraries, education and fire insurance will be the main topics at the annual fall Good Morning Canfield breakfast set for 7:30 to 9 a.m. Oct. 18 at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St.
Heidi Daniel, executive director of The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will give details of the much-anticipated expansion of the Canfield branch on Main Street.
Plans include renovation of the 5,104-square-foot location, built in 1969, plus the addition of 13,663 square feet.
All businesses that have opened in the city or township in the past 18 months will be recognized and a special memento will be given to those business owners in attendance.
Also, participating in a yet-to-be-announced activity during the breakfast will be Canfield School District students.
The event is sponsored by Farmers National Bank. Cost of the breakfast is $20 for Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber members and $30 for non-members.
