Crestview goes social on Twitter, Facebook page

October 10, 2013
By DEANNE JOHNSON , Salem News

NEW WATERFORD - In an effort to head off some of the rumors and misinformation posted on social media, Crestview Schools have now launched their own Facebook page and Twitter account.

Residents of the school district, including older students and parents, can now get information directly from the school on any of these electronic venues. The school district plans to continue to have the crestviewrebels.org website, but found many people are going to Facebook and Twitter for their information instead.

Now things posted the school website will also be posted directly to the Crestview Facebook site and Twitter as well. People will be able to comment, but on a limited basis. The filters will be in place to limit language. The site will be monitored by the technology department.

District technology coordinator Daryl Miller said the new page will allow the school to share school news, upcoming events and reach a broader base of people in the district. It also leaves the school more in charge of its own online presence.

In the past, residents and others may have created their own Facebook pages for Crestview Schools. The football team, athletic boosters, band and others have had their own Facebook pages. Miller said this will be an effort to link all of these places together.

Finally, misinformation will not be posted on the official school Facebook page, which has been an issue with pages created by others. One misinformed parent may have posted something, which spread throughout the community and left the school with no way to give the real explanation for what happened. Now the school will have that ability.

The Facebook page reportedly launched during Wednesday's board meeting, where the new site was shown to the board. The Facebook page can be located at Facebook.com/crestviewrebels and the Twitter page at Twitter.com/crestviewrebels.

Additionally, to make the Crestviewrebels.org site more user-friendly, Miller said a search option has been added. In other matters:

- The board voted to use Tim Hephner Lawn Care for snow removal this winter and next.

- The board will advertise 32 acres of farmland for lease.

- The board approved $26,069 toward the purchase of a new Dodge Ram 2500 four-wheel drive pickup for the school district's use. The pickup will be purchased from Columbiana Chrysler Jeep Dodge.
