Geraldine “Gerry” (Ellis) Thomas

SALEM- Geraldine "Gerry" (Ellis) Thomas who was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandma, sister and friend. She will be very sadly missed by all who knew her.

Gerry rejoined family and friends on Monday morning, Oct. 14, 2013, at 2:55 a.m. from the Crandall Medical Center/Copeland Oaks Retirement Community in Sebring, Ohio.

She was born on June 8, 1928, in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of the late Perce and Martha (Lyons) Ellis.

Gerry met the love of her life, Carl, at a baseball game in the summer of 1946. On Jan. 18, 1947, they were married in Monaca, Pa.

Gerry was a homemaker, a former 4-H leader, worked for the Shields Dress Shop, and Production Credit Association in Salem.

She was the Homecoming Queen for the Salem High School class of 1946. She belonged to a card club of high school friends that continues to meet as often as possible. Gerry loved people. She loved to entertain friends and especially family. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, sewing, cleaning and playing tennis. She was a member of the Salem First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and member of the Red Hat Society and the Tri-State Explorers.

In 1965, Carl and Gerry were the first for United Local Schools to host an exchange student. They were honored to have Liliana D'Agostina from Italy who has continued to keep in touch with Gerry.

She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie (husband Jay) Byrne of Garrettsville, Jody (husband Bob) Welker of Massillon; her sister, Doris Boughton of Salem; her grandchildren, Meghan Byrne (husband Avi Kar) of San Francisco, Calif., Marin Byrne (husband David Bitner) of Minneapolis, Minn., and Leah Byrne (husband Miguel Betegon) of San Francisco, Calif.; and a great-granddaughter, Jyotsna Kar-Byrne.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on Nov. 3, 2011, by her husband Carl; and a brother, Richard Ellis.

A Celebration of Life Service will be observed at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the Chapel of the Salem First United Methodist Church with the Rev. P. Douglas George of the church officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the parlor.

The family has kindly asked that in lieu of flowers, make memorial contributions to the Salem First United Methodist Church 244 S. Broadway Ave., Salem Ohio 44460.

The family wishes to thank the staff and management of Copeland Oaks, Crandall Medical Center and Hospice of the Valley for their loving care they gave Gerry.
