MURRELLS INLET, S.C.-Doris J. Mackey, 97, passed away Oct. 20, 2013 at Myrtle Beach Estates in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Mrs. Mackey was born Aug. 15, 1916 in East Liverpool, to Robert Herman and Ethel Webb Dietz. She graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1934 and St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cleveland in 1937.
She was married to William J. Mackey for 49 years. Bill passed away in 1989.
Mrs. Mackey, a longtime resident of Salem, was an avid gardener, active in the Salem Garden Club. Doris was also a member of the First Christian Church of Salem. Her career in nursing spanned 30 years, working for the Salem (Ohio) City Hospital as a registered nurse and a medical/surgical supervisor. She retired in 1982, when she and her husband established residence in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Doris and Bill were members of Litchfield Golf Club where they played often. Until well into her 80s she was an active swimmer and voracious reader as well as an enthusiastic listener to books on tape.
Doris' sister, Ethelyn, and her brother, Robert, are both deceased.
A daughter, Diane M. Berk, who lives in College Grove, Tenn., and a son, Robert, who resides in New York City, survive Mrs. Mackey. Her three grandchildren, Kyle, Elizabeth and Erin were a source of great pride.
By the deceased's request, her ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery along with her husband's, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Donations can be made in her memory to The Lighthouse International, a worldwide organization dedicated to overcoming vision impairment through rehabilitation, education, research and advocacy.
